Ted Wilks didn't look like he was going to be just coming out of the bullpen. In his first big-league season in 1944, Ted won 17 games for the Cardinals, losing only 4. In that season Wilks started 21 games and relieved 15 others. He never was quite that good again as a pitcher, but he found his niche in the bullpen some time later.
In 1946, he was 8-0, starting just 4 of 40 games. Wilks didn't lose a game the next season, either, going 4-0. Alas, Ted's ERA had climbed to over 5. But done as a pitcher? No way.
All he did in 1948 was win 6 games, pitch 130 2/3 innings, and allow only 7.8 hits per 9. While his career wasn't all that long, he continued to be effective from there. Having saved 13 games in '48, he added 9 more in 1949, 13 more in 1951, and 5 more in 1952. Wilks closed out his career with Cleveland in 1953.
