I have to confess: The shootout has lost me years ago!
It is a neat gimmick, don't get me wrong. But is it any way to end a hard fought game? I think 5 minutes of 4 on 4 is an exciting enough way to end it.
Remember back in the day when a player would get a penalty shot. I felt nice and rare. Today, if it goes to a shootout, you see at least 4 penalty shots. But in any event, here's whose been suffering via the shootout.
Interesting to see Anaheim, atop the West, 17-0-2 at home. But one of the those losses was...well...you guessed it!
This was before last night's (Jan 7th) action, by the way. But the Canucks, who already had a problem with shootouts at that point, weren't about to turn it around against Sid and his mates.
Being in 7th place for Vancouver could turn into 9th place or lower at this rate.
Detroit, for all of their struggles, is still in 5th place. But it's gotta stagger the mind to think where they'd be with a better record in the shootout.
In Carolina, New Jersey, Ottawa and Nashville's case, this could be the reason that they all miss the playoffs this year.
By the way, C Standing means the place that team is in. The letter following indicates which conference they are in. "W" for Western and "E" for Eastern.
