Luque Was The Reds' Bullpen Ace In 1919, Part 1

Though their World Series win was a bit tainted in '19, there is no doubt the Cincinnati Reds had a strong bullpen that year, even if that aspect of baseball was rather unused back in the deadball era.

Luque was from Havana, Cuba, and became the first Latino to pitch in the bigs when he debuted for the Boston Braves in 1914. Ironically, the year before, Dolph had pitched at "D" level with the Long Branch Cubans. And the native of Cuba promptly went 22-5. However, advancing as far as New Jersey ("AA") the next season saw Luque's record drop to 2-10. But his time in the Braves' organization would soon be over.

However, with Toronto of the international league (Again, "AA" ball) the following season, Dolph bounced back with fifteen wins and 2.96 earned run average. His time with the Boston Braves ended that year (1915), alas, having made a total of just four appearances over two seasons (Toronto had purchased Luque's contract in the spring). And, Dolph Luque would not return to major league baseball until 1918.

But once Dolph did return, he'd find his groove in the big-time. It's worth noting that Luque had pitched in the off-season in his native Cuba and excelled. Could he even stay, more less excel, in the bigs, had been a bit of a question mark. Though Dolph's numbers were good from 1916-1918 for Louisville:

1916: 13-8, 2.64 ERA.
1917: 2-4, 2.39
1918: 11-2, 2.00.

And, those numbers earned him an 12-game trial with the Cincinnati Reds in '18. Dolph started ten games and went 6-3. The Reds used him more out of the bullpen in their championship year of 1919, and Dolph really took off.

Appearing in 30 games, but this time only starting nine of them, Luque reached double-digits in wins for the first time (10-3). It's better than that for the purpose of this list: Dolph Luque was 5-0 out of the bullpen!

And when the World Series rolled around, Dolph was even better! He made two appearances (Both in relief) and held the Chicago White Sox at bay in each. In the third contest in Chicago, he took the hill in the last of the eighth and had a 1-2-3 inning, keeping Cincinnati within three runs of the home team. Dolph fanned the first batter he faced, Nemo Leibold. The Reds weren't able to score any runs in the ballgame, alas. They lost 3-0.

But by game seven (It was a best-of-nine tournament), Cincinnati was up in the series 4-2, needing just one more win to close Chicago out. And it was at the friendly confines of Crosley Field.

It just didn't turn out to be the home team's day. The Sox scored a run in the top of the first and third and added another two tallies in the fifth. Slim Sallee, who'd won game two (Allowing ten hits, however) was outta there after just 4 1/3 innings, four runs and nine hits against. Even in a series where the level of play Chicago was suspicious, they simply seemed to have Sallee's number: In 28 2/3 innings of the Fall Classic (Slim had pitched for the 1917 New York Giants, who'd yielded the World Series to the Chicago White Sox) against the Pale Hose, he'd allowed 39 hits and five walks!

Luque, though, owned Chicago in his two appearances in 1919. Ray Fisher had stopped the bleeding by getting the last two outs in the top of the fifth, but departed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the frame. So, in came our boy. Luque hopped in from the bullpen with his team down four here in game seven. It was an impressive four inning relief stint.

Shano Collins hit a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth, but that proved to be the only hit Luque allowed. In the seventh, Dolph fanned both Buck Weaver and Happy Felsch. Joe Jackson was retired in between, not even getting the ball out of the infield. Luque clearly had it on this day.

With one away in the last of the eighth, Swede Risberg reached on a dropped fly ball in centre. But, trying for second base, Swede was out. Dolph Luque retired the other two batters he faced in that frame, Chick Gandil and Ray Schalk. After three innings of work, Dolph had faced ten batters. He'd face only three more.

Eddie Collins, trying to win his first game of the 1919 Fall Classic, batted in the bottom of the eighth and Dolph fanned him. Shano Collins flied to centre and Eddie Collins grounded to second. Luque was through for the day: 4IP, 0R, 1H, 5K!

Not that any of use should be surprised. I mean, look at the Cuban-born #'s from the regular season that year:
