Mickey Lolich Still Had It in 1978, Part 1

Mickey Lolich was nearing the end of his career, in which he won over 200 games in 1978. But that didn't mean he wasn't still effective. He'd missed all of 1977 because he'd "retired". But Mickey still had plenty of life in that old arm.

Lolich had been second to Denny McLain back in 1968. The Detroit Tigers had the big righty in McLain, but the big lefty in Lolich. The difference was, Mickey won only seventeen games. Denny won 31 and had a 1.96 earned run average. However, it was the southpaw that went 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA in the World Series, rallying the Detroit Tigers from 3-1 down to win it all. Denny McLain wasn't so good: 1-2, with a 3.24 ERA!

The next year, Lolich was nineteen games. But McLain again was better. He won 24. Another Cy Young Award for Denny. Lolich had nothing to show for his great pitching. Except a World Series MVP.

But Denny McLain had personal demons, which included gambling. Not on baseball, but on horses. This lead to other problems. Plus, his arm had been used up from all those inning in 1968 and 1969. Denny was just 3-5 in 1970, having been suspended by MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn. Lolich was now the best pitcher on Detroit, winning fourteen games. Okay, maybe he wasn't. 14-19 isn't good, is it? Les Cain was 12-7.

With Denny McLain traded in '71, Detroit got a 25-win season from their lefty. Joe Coleman won twenty, as well. The team won 91 games under Billy Martin. It was the lefthander that was so dominant. Mickey topped the Junior Circuit with 308 strikeouts that year. Lolich kept on winning. In fact, he followed his 25 win season by recording 22 more in '72. Detroit lost a tough American League Championship Series vs. Oakland. But by 1974, Lolich lost twenty games. 21 to be exact. Between 1973 and 1975, you'd think Mickey was just fine. In that three-year stretch, he won 44 games, on average about fifteen a season. But the lefthander also lost 54 games during those three seasons. Worse still, Mickey Lolich was no longer on Detroit after 1975. He was now in another league. The older league. With the New York Mets in 1976, he won eight, but lost thirteen.

But on the plus side, Mickey didn't have to face the designated hitter anymore (That had come into play three seasons' earlier), and his earned run average was 3.22. That was Mickey's best since his 22-win season in '72 (2.50). There seemed to be nothing left for Lolich to prove. Had he won 200 games? Lolich had won more, 215. His career earned-run average was less than 3.50 (3.44). So retiring made since.

Having said that, did the big lefthander's comeback in 1978 make sense? Pitching out of the bullpen, except for two starts, it did! Mickey Lolich made eighteen appearances for the San Diego Padres that year. It had been a long time, fifteen years, since he'd made so many relief appearances. But he'd learned. In 1963, Mickey's ERA out of the Tigers' bullpen was over six.

Okay, the downside was Lolich's win total. Despite making 20 appearances with the Padres in '78 the lefty won just two games (And lost one). But Mickey's effectiveness will show in later stats.
