Mudcat Wasn't Grant(ing) Many Batter's Wishes In 1970, Part 2

So, just scratching the surface of Mudcat Grant's 1970 season, his stats are impressive. But more impressively, was that Grant's 80 appearances resulted in some saves, too. To go along with a splendid 8-3 record.

Well, the saves? Grant spent 1970 with Oakland and Pittsburgh. All 24 of his saves came with the Athletics. But it's not to say the Pirates didn't need him down the stretch. Pittsburgh finished '70 with a record of 89-73. The new addition in their bullpen arrived on September 14th. From there, Jim made eight appearances and posted an excellent earned-run average of just 2.25.

And while Mudcat didn't get a save, he recorded a hold in his very first appearance in a Pirate uniform. Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia 5-3, and Grant went three strong innings, allowing no runs and just one hit. And he won games on the 25th and 26 of the month. These fine performances lowered his ERA on the season to just 1.76. But the campaign ended on a downer note.

Jim Grant came into a game on September 30th, looking to nail down a 3-2 Pirate lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. But then Jose Cardenal greeted him rudely. Jose, the first batter in the bottom of the ninth, tied the game with a home run. Mudcat looked to get out the inning tied 3-3 as there were two outs, and just one man on. Jose Cruz kept the inning going with a single. Lou Brock played the hero role with a walk-off single.

But still, it was a great season. That was one blown save with Pittsburgh. Mudcat had one other with Oakland. An excellent save percentage. And that ERA in '70? 1.86. Though Grant wasn't overpowering, his walks and hits allowed per innings pitched was just 1.064. All that led to an excellent 4.9 wins above replacement that season.

Oakland, needless to say, must have had some regrets about trading Grant that season. A mere five years after being one of the best starters in the game, Jim Grant was one (If not the) best reliever in the bigs. So the Athletics got him back in 1971. Grant had started the season in Pittsburgh. Not quite the pitcher he'd previously been, nonetheless Grant had a 5-3 record with the Pirates. His ERA was 3.60. But back with the Oakland A's to finish '71, Jim was awesome.

Yep, Grant finished 1971 with the Athletics, who acquired him on August 10th. In fifteen regular season appearances, all Jim did was go 1-0, pickup three saves (To go along with his seven from the Pirates earlier that year) and post a 1.98 earned run average. I think it's safe to say that Mudcat Grant liked pitching in Oakland.

For it would lead to his first postseason appearance in six seasons. It may have been just one appearance (The third contest in the American League Championship Series vs. Baltimore), but it was memorable. Two innings pitched, no runs, two strikeouts. All this count not prevent the Orioles from beating the Athletics 5-3, to complete a sweep of the best-of-five series. Good as Oakland was, they weren't quite in the class of a Baltimore team that had four twenty game winners (Dave McNally, Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson).

You'd think, this budding Oakland team could have used someone like Grant, who was 36 years old and still might have a few more years in his arm. Alas, the Athletics released him at the end of November. Jim went to spring training the next season, hoping to catch on with another old club of his, Cleveland. But the Indians released him.

However, Grant did pitch in 1972. Pitching for the Iowa Oaks of the American Association ("AAA" level), Mudcat was great again. Although only 5-5, he picked up 16 saves and a stellar 2.38 earned run average. Alas, this was Jim's last season as a player in organized baseball.

But Mudcat Grant sure knew how to pitch. In the mid-1980s, the great Hank Aaron recruited Grant to be the new pitching coach of the minor league Durham Bulls. Grant's nephew, Domonic Brown, ended up playing six years in the bigs in the 2010s. But Mudcat's best work was not on the field. He pushed for more blacks in the bigs, as their number began to decline around the mid-2000s.

And then there was Grant the writer. In 2005, he wrote a book, The 12 Black Aces, which was about the twelve pitchers (At the time) that had managed to win 20 games in one big-league season. Way back in 1965 with Minnesota, Jim had won 21 contests for Minnesota. Mudcat Grant had certainly show black players the way on and off the field.
