Garrett Whitlock, the Red Sox's new pitcher in 2021, didn't become the closer. Nor did he become a starter. That doesn't mean he wasn't effective.
Consider that his 1.96 earned run average was tops among all other Boston pitchers this past season. That, goes along nicely with his eight relief wins in '21.
With no one great Boston Red Sox pitcher, save for Chris Sale, who didn't join the team until August, the bullpen was needed. This was where Garrett Whitlock came onto the scene.
In his 46 appearances, Whitlock pitched 73 1/3 innings, so Garrett could be long man for Boston. His very first appearance saw him go 3 1/3 innings. Whitlock also went three innings on May 13th. He allowed just a single run in the combined 6 1/3 innings.
As far as saves went, the new Boston pitcher only collected two. One of them was his impressive three inning stint vs. Oakland in May 13th. Garrett Whitlock's other save was on September 3rd.
But what about other stats? He blew just three chances to hold the lead. As for holds, Garrett had three by the end of April, pitching 6 1/3 innings in those outings. By July, Whitlock was awesome. He went 1-0 with four holds and an ERA of just 0.75!
When the season ended, Garrett Whitlock had fifteen holds to go along with eight wins, two saves and an earned run average of just 1.96. Garrett spent the last part of September on the ten-day injured list, but was activated just before postseason paly began. As for Whitlock's team, the Boston Red Sox finished in second place in the American League East. That qualified them for postseason play. Boston beat the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Game. Garrett Whitlock came into the game in the top of ninth inning to close it out.
Since the Red Sox led the Yankees 6-1, it wasn't a save situation. Whitlock might have let up a little. After getting the dangerous Aaron Judge out on a grounder to short, Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run. The good news was, that was it for the visiting Yankees. The win moved Boston on to face the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series.
The best-of-five affair saw Boston drop the opener, then put on some serious faces in the next three contests.
It wasn't exactly easy, save for the 14-6 drubbing in the third game, but it was the Red Sox that beat the Rays three straight times. Did Garrett Whitlock have anything to do with it? In the 6-4 extra-inning game three win, Whitlock didn't get a decision, but looked strong in his 1 1/3 inning stint. Despite allowing a walk, Garrett didn't permit a run and struck out three batters.
Our boy made sure this Division Series did not go the limit. The Fenway Faithful watched helplessly as the visiting Rays rallied for two runs in the top of the eight. The 5-3 lead by the Red Sox was gone. But have no fear, Garrett Whitlock was here!
Randy Arozarena was on second after hitting a game-tying single and taking second on the throw. There were no outs. But Whitlock retired the next three batters and Arozarena never even made it to third. Needing just seven more pitches (After throwing just eight in the eighth), Garrett got Tampa 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth, to keep this thing 5-5. The home team had a nice walk-off arranged in the last of the ninth to pull it out, making their rookie pitcher the winner.
So it was the Houston Astros who blocked the path of the Boston Red Sox in their effort to secure the 2021 American League Pennant. The Astros took game one of the best-of-seven American League Championship Series 5-4.
Back came Boston in the second contest. Garrett Whitlock pitched two scoreless innings in a 9-5 Red Sox rout. The series shifted to Fenway park for games three, four and five. Back at home, Boston won the third contest, 12-3. But this proved to be the last win by the Red Sox in 2021.
The Red Sox' offence seemed to sputter as they were ahead 2-1 after just one frame. The home team didn't score again. And the Astros tied it up in the top of the eight as Garrett Whitlock allowed a home run by Jose Altuve. Whitlock then allowed a single by Michael Brantley, but avoided further trouble via a double play and a flyball.
The wheels really came off the chariot for Boston in the ninth. The 2-2 tie was broken when Houston touched home seven times to put this game out of reach. Sadly, for the Red Sox, they were unable to recover. The Astros pitching got hot, and the offence was deadly. Game five was 9-1 for Houston. Back at home for the sixth contest, five Astros' pitchers combined to throw a two-hit shutout as the home team won 5-0. Boston's season was over.
But still, the Sox had a great rookie relief pitcher. And with him, Boston got within two games of the Fall Classic. His outstanding long relief could result in his being converted to a starter next season. For now, though the numbers of Garrett's 2021 season are a great start to his major league career.
Though not a closer, Whitlock posted a 2.9 wins above replacement, and also averaged nearly ten strikeouts per nine innings.
