Jones Really Did The Job In 1992, Part 2

So Doug Jones was on a 1992 Astros team that had so-so (At best) starters but a strong bullpen. The team finished .500 thanks to three relievers. Jones was probably the most valuable among them.

I'd better give credit where credits is due. Joe Boever and Xavier Hernandez did a masterful job of providing save opportunities for Doug Jones. Hernandez, in addition to winning nine games, post a great 2.11 earned run average. Boever had a 2.51 ERA that year.

So it was up to Doug Jones to nail 'em down. He saved 36 our of 43 games for a save percentage of about 86 percent. Jones earned run average better than Xavier Hernandez and Joe Boever, you see. It was amazing, 1.85!

Doug also fanned 93 batters in 111 2/3 innings pitched. That's 7.5 K's per nine. Xavier Hernandez was a bit better, 7.8. What about Wins Above Replacement? Jones topped all pitchers on Houston in 1992 with a 2.8. Hernandez was a strong 2.1.

Jones had a Walks and Hits Allowed Per Inning of 1.012. Here's where there is some distance in Doug's favour. Xavier Hernandez's was 1.108 and Joe Boever's was 1.329.

So Houston certainly appeared to have found their closer. Jones did fall back the next year, despite another 26 saves. His earned run average was 4.54. Then, Doug was off to Philadelphia to replaced the departing Mitch Williams. The Phillies, fresh off their first pennant in ten years, were counting on Doug to deliver, and he sure did. The strike-shortened 1994 season saw Doug go only 2-4, but save 27 games and post an ERA of just 2.17. Philadelphia finished a disappointing 54-61, however.

It seemed like Jones had difficulty finding a home, or sometimes, consistency. 1995 saw him land a job with Baltimore, but his earned run average was over five. There were stops in Chicago (With the Cubs) and Milwaukee in 1996, but Jones couldn't get the closer role.

But, determined to prove 1992 was no fluke, Doug landed back where it had all began for him fifteen years earlier. His first stint with Milwaukee had been not much to write home about. But here, in 1997, Mike Fetters misfortune turned into Doug Jones resurrection.

The Brew Crew saw something they could never have foreseen back in 1982 in Doug Jones. Here he was, on the Brewers, pitching like he had for the 1992 Houston Astros. Jones took the closer role from the aforementioned Fetters (Who missed all of April) and went with it.

Although 40 years old, Doug had mastered the role of the closer. He won six, saved thirty-six and looked in dominating form despite his advanced age. His 2.02 earned run average was easily the best of any reliever on the Brewers in 1997. And Jones was still durable, appearing in a league-leading 73 games.

Doug pitched another three years in the big leagues, never quite regaining his 1997 form. When he retired after the 2000 season, Jones could take pride in having eclipsed the 300 save mark (303, to be exact). Doug didn't actually leave the game, eventually becoming a pitching coach and dabbling into the music industry. Sadly, Covid-19 took him from us at the age of 64 in 2021.
