Way back in 1959, with the original Senators still around, and baseball just having moved out west, saw Mantle vs. Mays and other great head-to-head contest. Just gotta hit those fat pitches over the wall! Wrigley Field in Los Angeles was the venue of choice.
Things to look for:
Odd Rule #1: If you take the pitch it's a strike? Sure...
Odd Rule #2: The pitcher who gives up the most home runs also gets a bonus? To bad that doesn't work in the regular season!
Doesn't all that money so minuscule?
The Mick, he's a natural at hitting and charisma! Even when he's just saying nothing, really, he's soooooo cool!
Speaking of which, notice how he hits from the power side, right-handed. You know, I've always wondered how he would have fared as just a lefty or a righty. One thing is for sure, he puts a lot of topspin on the ball while batting righty.
Mark Scott, the host...Just a little to boring for my taste!
The ballpark itself, Wrigley field. Take a look. Two years later the expansion Los Angeles Angels played their (Before their move to, The Big A), and it yielded many a home run (For both sides). Odd that they've choose that venue. But from what I've read, the contest was filmed in the winter of '59/60, and the Dodgers and Giants didn't play in any attractive places.
Speaking of which, what is the attendance for this event? Big time oversight not to allow anyone in!
Mays vs. Mantle is worth the price of admission!
Mays says he can hit anyone who throws righty or lefty. Funny, Sandy Koufax fanned 18 San Francisco Giants the year before, August 31, 1959. But Sandy didn't hit his stride until 1961, so Willie's comment is fairly accurate!
Whoa...Two teammates go head-to-head? What are they doing, trying to start a rift?
No doubt, Mathews' bringing up that screen in right was in the script. They're just reading their lines! Gotta be the series' most unintentionally hilarious moment!
So odd to see Mantle vs. Banks! They never faced each other in an All-Star-Game and in the spring.
Mantle's smile after getting handed the check. You want to know why? He played for George Weiss, who always made Mickey fight tooth and nail for every last dime!
Jim Lemon...How is the view from above? This guy was a skyscraper!
