Sid Monge was another relieve who just wasn't going to make it as a starter. Though his W-L record was good in the minors, he just couldn't do that in the bigs.
A native of Agua Prieta, Mexico, Sid posted win totals of 12, 14 and 14 again in the minor leagues from 1971-1975. But only in 1971, when Monge was 12-11 with Quad Cities ("A" ball) did he post a good earned run average (2.40). So a call up from the California Angels in 1975 saw him 0-2 in two starts and only four appearances.
But more appearances came for Monge out of the bullpen the next season, and his potential showed. Sid, whose given name is Isidro, appeared in 32 games in 1976 for the Angels, but nineteen of them were in relief. So Sid was 6-7. But this appeared to be the high-water mark of his career as he struggled in 1977, getting traded to Cleveland and ending the season with an ERA over five.
But it was in 1978 that Sid had a breakthrough. Although only 4-3, he pitched in a (then) career-high 84.2 innings and was 4-3 with a 2.76 earned run average.
As it turns out, Sid was just "warming up" for 1979.
Monge won a dozen games, lost ten, but pilled up 131 innings pitched. He appeared in 76 games, finishing 53. The closer's job on Cleveland was split between Monge and Victor Cruz, who'd been the top bullpen man on Toronto the year before. But by the end of the season, Sid Monge was clearly the better of the two relievers. In fact, no other reliever other than Sid on the '79 Indians (Minimum thirteen games) came close to his earned run average that season. This performance got him named to the AL squad in the mid-summer classic.
And although he never was quite this effective in the subsequent seasons, Sid went on to big league wins.
