Coumbe Was Cleveland's Ace In 2017, Part 2

Fritz Coumbe had spent three seasons in the bigs by 1917, but had slowly gotten better. His earned run average was 2.29 as a rookie with the Red Sox / Indians. But it shot up over three in 1915, meaning he actually fell back.

But Fritz got it back in 1916. Not only did he go 7-5, but his ERA dropped to 2.02. Having said that, his '17 season is still better. Sure, his earned run average climbed, but Coumbe seemed to have it all going.

He won a career-best (To that point) eight games. He added five saves, which was also a career best (And this Fritz would not top). Okay, his earned run average was a bit higher. Are we going to complain about 2.14? No. Fritz's 1.1 wins above replacement is sadly disappointing. However, based on what I've told you, is Coumbe's WAR a tad misleading?

Fritz did have help. If I'm trying to imply there wasn't any other relief pitchers on that 1917 Cleveland Indians team, than let me assure you of Otis Lambeth. Otis won seven games himself, saved two more and pitched nearly 100 innings. He was the second best reliever on the team, though. Lambeth's ERA was over three (3.14), and sadly, he was out of the bigs in two seasons.

Al Gould was good, too. Although only 4-4, he logged in 46 1/3 innings. But again, his earned run average. It was 3.64. So Fritz Coumbe was clearly the best bullpen pitcher on the team.

Coumbe, sadly, would have only one last great season in the bigs. Adding career bests in starts (Seventeen) and wins (Thirteen), Fritz pitched 150 innings in 1918 and added three more saves in relief. Alas, this workload seemed to doom him. His 1919 season was dissapointing. His ERA was over five. And...Fritz had thrown his last pitch in the American League.

Arriving in Cincinnati in 1920, the team probably was looking forward to a repeat of their 1919 pennant (And World Crown). We know what Cleveland did in Fritz' absence that year: They won it all!

But Coumbe was able to make just three appearances with the Reds in 1920, all in relief. In the minors with St. Paul, Fritz won nineteen games, proving there was still some life in him. That got him his September call up. It must have seemed like a lost year, alas. Although he made a nice comeback to the major leagues the next season, it proved to be his last in the bigs.

Fritz went 3-4 in '21, but his earned run average was again good, 3.22. This was his farewell to the big-time. What is odd is no MLB team ever brought him back up.

Way out west in the Pacific Coast League in 1922, Fritz won ten games and had a good ERA, 3.40. Though his earned run average shot all the way up to 5.99 the next season as Coumbe was now on Salt Lake, Fritz kept right on winning, 13-12. It seemed like his days pitching out of the bullpen were over. Although he never made it back to The Show, it seemed like he'd found a home.

He floundered over the next seasons, but by 1928, now nearly 40, Fritz found it again. With Baltimore of "AA" ball, he was a credible 12-13. Then, 15-5 the next season, with Baltimore and spending time with Elmira at the "B" level. He continued to win, going 5-3 with Baltimore and finally retiring after going 8-8 his last season with Elmira and New York (Again, "B" level).

Despite a high ERA (4.84) in the minors, 4.14, Fritz won 76 games, lost 52 and appeared in over 200 contests. His big league level record was exactly .500 (38-38), yet his earned run average there was just 2.80. Coumbe may have been an example of a pitcher who could win as a starter, yet was more effective in a dual role of spot-starter reliever.
