Jimmy Dygert had helped the Philadelphia Athletics win games since 1906, despite a not-so-good showing when he was a rookie the previous year. In seemed like in between the A's two pennants in 1905 and 1910, that Jimmy was reliable whether starting or relieving.
In 1909, Philadelphia won 95 games (Three more than they'd won back in '05), but finished second to Detroit in the American League. One could look at Jimmy Dygert's earned run average the last four years and note the consistency.
As a starter in 1906, Jimmy had lowered his earned run average to under three, 2.70. Never again, by the time of his last MLB season, would it go above 2.87. That 2.87 was in 1908, when Jimmy was just 11-15. However, he'd won 21 games the year before.
By 1909, it was time for Dygert to make the transition from starter to spot starter / reliever. I'm not sure that Jimmy took this as an insult, but to say he wasn't needed was wrong. Having said that, Philly tried to unload the sometimes wild righty to the St. Louis Browns in the offseason, but that trade fell through But together with Rube Vickers, Philly had a great 1-2 bullpen bunch for '09. Mack had been wise to keep Jimmy Dygert.
Vickers recorded just one save, while Chief Bender and Jack Coombs were the only other Athletics' hurlers to record one that season. That does not, however, mean our boy was not effective. To break down let's look at opponent's batting against Jimmy Dygert that year:
As a starter, batters hit .258
As a reliever hit just .211
So the shift to the bullpen seemed like a good move. Jimmy finished the season with an excellent earned run average of just 2.42. By comparison, Rube Vickers had only a respectable ERA, 3.40. I'm not trying to say Vickers was not needed. But Rube would have to take a back seat to Jimmy that season as the top bullpen man.
Okay, so what about Dygert's other stats for this list? He was a better K man than Vickers, fanning 79 batters in 137 1/3 innings (5.2 per 9). Now for the bad news. Dygert's wins above replacement was a -0.4 for 1909. This was a huge drop-off from the previous season, where Jimmy's WAR was an impressive 3.6.
Despite the negative WAR, it's not as if Dygert was done. His 1910 season was very good, too. 4-4, 2.54 earned run average. It appears as though Connie Mack really didn't want him anymore, alas. In 1905, he'd been on the postseason roster and not pitched in the Fall Classic vs. the New York Giants. Here, five years later, Philly won the pennant and faced of against the Chicago Cubs. Well, Dygert was named to the postseason roster again (And rightfully so), but again, Jimmy did not pitch. And unlike 1905, the Athletics made sure to win the World Series.
Connie Mack ultimately traded Jimmy Dygert in March of 1911 to Baltimore of the Eastern League ("A" ball). And with that, Jimmy's major league career was over despite a 57-49 record and a 2.65 earned run average. With the Orioles, Dygert stuck it to Mack: 25-15, 3.42 ERA. Though he continued to pitch at both the "A" and "AA" level for the next two seasons, Dygert was not effective, and he hung 'em up after the 1913 season.
His post-baseball life included stints as a repair foreman and an engineer. Jimmy also worked in building trades. He passed away in February of 1936 from pneumonia.
