Hughes Was Bad News In 1916, Part 2

 Tom Hughes hadn't quite been good enough to be a starter when he first hit the big-time in 1906. Pitching for the New York Highlanders that season, Tom was 1-0, but his earned run average was high (4.20). While Hughes improved on that, it seemed like he still have much to prove in the major leagues.

His stay in the minors leagues in 1908 (He was 16-0) and later in 1911-1913 proved Tom was good enough, right? With two different Rochester teams from '11-13, he went 47-35). This was at the "A" and "AA" level. And here, Hughes was still a starter. You'd think he'd be in the bigs, right?

In 1914, Tom was back in the bigs, but first spent time in Rochester, going 17-9, allowing 2.60 runs per nine. Finally, his team, the Boston Braves (Who happened to win it all that year) called Tom up in September and went 2-0 with the National League-pennant winning team.

The next year was for him, but Boston hadn't quite decided what to do with him. Starting half the time (Out of 50 games pitched), Tom won 16, but somehow lost 13 despite a great ERA, 2.12.

So in 1916, Hughes put it all together. He led the National League in winning percentage, but also picked up five saves. This proved that 1915 wasn't a fluke. Tom topped 'em all in saves with nine in '15. His ERA was just 2.35 in '16. And Tom could throw! For the third consecutive season, Hughes averaged better than five strikeouts per nine innings (5.4). His walks and hits allowed per inning did not quite match 1914 and 1915, however. 

Oddly enough, this was Tom's last full season in the bigs. Perhaps one of the events that spelled his doom was getting hit by a pitch in September, resulting in a fracture.

When Tom was able to pitch in 1917, he was great. Used only eleven times, Tom actually started eight games and went 5-3 with a 1.95 earned run average. Hughes had held out in the spring, apparently. Not helping matters were reports of a sore wrist. A sore arm, perhaps? Still, his numbers were good when his body was. But had the injury that ended Tom Hughes' previous season spelt his doom?

And despite a pretty good 1918 season, it just might have. At the big-league level, at least. Appearing in only three games with the Braves that season, Tom was now just a starter. Although he went 0-2, his ERA was still respectable, 3.44. However, 1918 ended up being Hughes last in the big time!

After a failed comeback attempt in 1919 with the Los Angeles Angels ("AA") of the Pacific Coast League and then reports that Tom had retired to be a car salesman, the pitching bug returned in 1920. Hughes was now pitching with the Angels and later Sacramento Seals, Tom was back! He went 7-4 with LA (His stats with the Seals are unknown). Following this comeback, Hughes continued to make a name for himself in LA.

He went only 14-14 in 1921 (However, Tom's earned run average was an impressive 2.84), but rebounded to go 17-9 in '22, posting a 3.08 ERA. However, that 1922 season was to be Tom's last great year in the minors at any level. His record was just 14-16 and 12-14 in the next two seasons with the Angels. A brief rebound in 1925 saw Hughes go 5-4 with a 3.94 earned-run average. At this point, Tom was in his 40s. He'd done some coaching and some filling-in as a manager. Tom also had just one season left in organized baseball.

Tom was just 5-9 with Beaumont of the Texas League ("A" ball) in 1926. While his earned run average was credible, 3.85, Hughes was really getting up there in years. He '26 season finished with an 0-3 record and a hefty ERA of 6.16 with Little Rock of the Southern League (Again, "A" level).

Tom Hughes was now 42, and it was obvious he was never getting back to the major-league level. It was now the time to move on away from baseball, and Tom did just that. His new job was first in the insurance business, but then come World War II, more important work. It was Hughes who helped with producing airplanes during this troublesome times. It was in 1961 that Tom succumbed to a combination of tuberculosis, emphysema, and pneumonia.
