Tom Hughes was rarely not helpful on any team he pitched for. And because Tom started thirteen games in 1916 for the Boston Braves, I might be pushing the envelope as to whether he deserves to be on my list.
But let there be no doubt: Regardless of his role as a pitcher, Hughes delivered!
Okay, maybe Tom Hughes got off to a rough start. However, once he was ready for the bigs, he performed well. In his first year of pro ball in 1904, Tom pitched for two means in the Missouri Valley League ("C" level). Pitching first in Pittsburgh and then Topeka, he was 10-26 combined in 47 appearances. This was not a setback. Tom was 14-18 with a 4.58 earned run average with Topeka the next season. Then, in 1906, Hughes was in the bigs.
While Tom may have had to wait until September of '06 to take the hill for the New York Highlanders, Hughes might have been just too good to be left in the minors that season. He was 25-5 for the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association. Tom was still at the "C" level, but as mentioned, not for long.
With the Yankees, Tom went 1-0 in three appearances. His earned run average was over four. Though the next year Hughes was back in the minors, the Yankees needed him. Back in the big, bad Bronx, Tom improved to 2-0 with a 2.67 earned run average in four appearances.
His 1908 season is notable as Tom made a mockery of the minors. 16-0 with the Newark Indians. Perhaps he was not a happy camper in the minor leagues. Clearly, Tom should have been back up with the parent club.
That wouldn't happen that season. But his next two years were spent primarily with the Yankees. He was only 7-8 and 7-9 with the Highlanders the next two years, but Tom should have been in the bigs to stay. He'd earned it. More importantly, Tom had found his niche. In 1909, he started pitched games with New York. But he was used nine times in relief. The next season, 23 games pitched. Eight relief appearances. And both seasons he pitched well despite his losing record.
But still, Hughes was back in the minors. Where again, he was just too good. It would fall on the laps of the Boston Braves to bring him back to the bigs, but not until 1914. That was a good year to pitch for Boston.
In the years between 1911 and 1914, Tom Hughes had to be one the better pitchers in the minor leagues. Sure, his ERA was a little high, but he won the games, didn't he? With the Rochester Broncos of the Eastern League ("A" ball) in 1911, Tom went 15-12.
Still pitching in Rochester the next two season, but actually on another team, this time the Hustlers of the International League ("AA" ball), Tom was even better: 17-10 in 1912! Hughes followed that by going 15-13 in '13. Then in 1914, Tom started the year in Rochester (Going 17-9) and finished it back in the bigs with the World Series-winning Boston Braves (Going 2-0 in September).
Tom's perseverance was rewarded. Was 1915 ever a breakout! He started 25 games and made the same number of appearances out of the bullpen. Did Hughes win games? Sure did, 16. Though he lost 14, the Braves were no doubt impressed. How about a little less starts and more relief appearances? That happened in 1916, and Tom had his best season!
Topping the National League in winning percentage, Tom was 16-3. That helped Boston to 89 wins that season. Although only good enough for third place in the senior circuit, it was the team's third straight season of at least 83 triumphs.
One of the reasons for Boston's success in 1916 was their bullpen. It was rare, of course, to have one great relief pitcher on one team back then. The Braves had two. Ed Reulbach, a star of some years back, was giving Tom Hughes some serious competition as the Boston bullpen ace in '16. Ed had been a great pitcher long before Tom was. Pitching for the Chicago Cubs, the veteran had topped the National League in W% three years in a row from 1906-1908. The Cubs made the World Series all three years.
But not really a starter anymore, Reulbach got into 21 games, and ten relief appearances. Truth be told, he wasn't far off Hughes that season. But the big difference is Ed was just 7-6 despite a great earned run average, compared to Tom's excellent W%, 16 wins and a fine ERA of his own! Hughes was more of the "Go-to" guy, as well. Hughes appeared in 40 games, relieving 27 times, for a total of 161 innings pitched. He finished nineteen games compared to Ed's seven. Reulbach finished the 1916 season with just 109 1/3 innings pitched.
And by the way, it's not that Tom wasn't a good starter, either. On June 16th of '16, Tom went all the way against Pittsburgh, allowing not a single hit in his nine frames. The last out? Honus Wagner. Hughes finished the no-no in style by fanning "The Flying Dutchman".
