The Reason to See Oakland in '68 was Segui, Part 1

Diego Segui was a pitcher who just seemed to need a breakthrough season to realize his potential. Through six seasons at the big-league level, Diego looked good at times, but couldn't maintain his potential.

When you start your career 8-5 and 9-6, you must be pitching well at least sometimes out there. The truth is though, the native of  Holguin, Cuba wasn't on a good team. That team? The Kanas City Athletics would soon be on the move. And it's possible the team's ineptitude effected Diego's pitching performance.

It's not pretty when you top the league in losses. Diego Segui managed to do that with 17 despite another 9 wins in 1964. By the end of 1967 (Segui would have a one-year stay with the Washington Senators in 1966), the A's were on the move and Segui was getting his much-needed change of scenery. Still, he was with a poor team. The team went just 62-99 in Segui's last campaign in Kansas. His 3-4 record brought Diego Segui's career won-lost record to just 36-54, a .400 W%.

However, Segui had begun to turn things around. Okay, the 3-4 record wasn't the best. Neither was KC. Diego's earned run average was just 3.09. Now, could he just improve on that? The team needed to improve, too, you see?

1968 was much better.

The A's, now in Oakland, were over .500 (82-80). Segui was exclusively a reliver that year, appearing in 52 games for the Athletics. The bad news is he wasn't a closer. The good news is, Oakland needed his arm for other reasons. The bullpen itself was one of the A's strengths in 1968. You had the closer, Jack Aker. Jack was a few years past his league-leading 32 saves with Kansas in 1966, but still effective, slamming the door shut on the opposition a dozen times. His earned run average was a little high, but that just meant others got chances to close, too. Including Segui.

Like the bullpen, the starters didn't have that one shining light. Catfish Hunter and Jim Nash were each better than their 13-13 record would indicate. The starter with the best winning percentage was Blue Moon Odom .615 (16-10). Chuck Dobson (12-14) and (Lew Krausse) rounded out a pretty impressive rotation.

So the bullpen was good, too, right? Did that leave enough room for Diego Segui? Segui might have only been 6-5, but the six wins was tops among the A's bullpen. Jack Aker was only 4-4. Ed Sprague Sr. was just 3-4. Paul Lindblad had an excellent year, too, but could only go 4-3.

Diego's excellence might best be demonstrated by a look at his innings pitched in 1968. You don't have to be the closer to see the most action. Segui ended up with 83 1/3 innings in '68. Aker had only 74 2/3. Sprague 68 2/3. Lindblad 56 1/3.

Okay, so Segui wasn't finishing games like Aker was. Jack had 30. Diego had 24. Paul Lindblad had 20 himself. But the Cuban right-hander was the toughest of them all in the Oakland Athletics' bullpen in 1968, as Diego Segui allowed just 5.5 hits per 9.
