McDowell Got Better And Better In 1989, Part 2

Roger McDowell's second set of stats only further enhances his 1989 season as one of the best out of the bullpen.

But the season hadn't quite started out that way. A mainstay on that famed 1986 New York Mets team, Roger had been quite a pitcher in The Big Apple. After saving seventeen games as a rookie in 1985, the next season was only better. The Mets went all the way, and McDowell saved 22 more. In the next two seasons Roger's save totals were 25 and 16. New York made it back to the postseason in 1988, and seemed destined destined to go past the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. It went seven games, but the Dodgers prevailed.

The 1989 season had started out slow for Roger McDowell. His win-loss record was 3-6, and he had only four saves. New York traded him, Lenny Dykstra and a player to be named later (It ended up being another pitcher, Tom Edens) to Philadelphia for Juan Samuel. It was in Philly that McDowell earned a new lease on life.

He'd saved four of five games with New York. With Philadelphia, Roger saved 19 of 23 games. With the Mets, McDowell's earned run average was 3.31. But after the trade to the Phillies, it dropped to just 1.11. All told, Roger McDowell posted a 1.96 ERA for 1989. Though he wasn't overpowering, Roger was getting the outs when needed.

McDowell's wins above placement was actually a minus, (-0.8) with New York. However, in only 56 2/3 innings with Philadelphia, Roger's WAR improved to 2.0.
