Roger McDowell was one of those pitchers who was on that great 1986 New York Mets' team. He was sort of destined to be great.
The bullpen was a huge part of the Mets' success in '86. But don't forget, New York almost made it back to the World Series two years later. It took the Los Angeles Dodgers seven games to deny them that.
Amazingly, even one of New York's starters, Rick Aguilera, was so good, he found success later on with Minnesota. From either way you choose it, be it here or here, Rick was awesome later in his career with Minnesota. By the time he'd retired, Aguilera had picked up over 300 saves.
McDowell was a bit different. Unlike Aguilera, he didn't start many games (Rick finished with 89 starts). But like Aguilera, McDowell ended up winning many (70 to be exact). But Roger McDowell only started two games in his career.
With the New York Mets in 1986, McDowell won fourteen games and saved twenty-two. This was only his second year at the MLB level. In the minors, Roger's first year (1982) gave hints to perhaps being a fine starter. He went 6-4 with Shelby of the South Atlantic League ("A" ball), and then even better with Lynchburg of the Carolina League ("A" level, again). With the Lynchburg Mets, McDowell was 2-0 with an earned run average of just 2.15.
But 1983 seemed like a step back. Now pitching for the Jacksonville Mets of the Texas League ("AA" ball), Roger struggled, going just 11-12 with a 4.86 ERA. The next year was worse. The right-handed pitcher needed some surgery on his elbow, and evidentially the procedure didn't make the arm 100 percent. McDowell was only able to appear in three games (Two of them starts), going 0-0 with a 3.68 earned run average. Still, the young pitcher was able to continue that season as the Mets made it to the playoffs. Now honing his deadliest weapon in his pitching arsenal (Roger's two-seamer), the thing was breaking across the dish more than it had prior that repair work. Perhaps it had all been worth it?
Well, the next year, there was a new rookie relief pitcher in the National League.
The New York Mets allowed him only two starts in 1985, April 28th and May 4th. The April one wasn't too bad (Six hits and three runs over five and a third of an inning). But the May one was...Mayday! This time, McDowell allowed six runs on six hits in just five innings. This proved to be his last major league start. And since he never returned to the minors, that outing was his last start, period.
But, after settling into the bullpen for the rest of the year, it was Roger McDowell finding his niche. He ended the year with six wins. Next year, fourteen. Seven more in 1988, and New York was back to the postseason. Of the four appearances in the National League Series vs. Los Angeles, Roger finished three. However, there were no saves and an earned-run average of 4.50.
The Mets were a great team at the time, but management felt they needed to make changes, evidentially. They traded their colourful pitcher (Who was known for penchant for pulling of pranks) along with Lenny Dykstra and a player to be named later (It ended up being another pitcher, Tom Edens) to the Philadelphia Phillies. In return, the New York Mets received Juan Samuel.
At the time of the deal, Roger McDowell might have needed a change of scenery. With New York, he was just 1-5 with a 3.31 ERA. Well, sometimes your win-loss record can be deceiving if you are a relief pitcher. Certainly that earned-run average was indicative of a pitcher who was still good.
But did Roger ever turn it around in Philly.
From there, McDowell was 3-3 in 44 appearances. Putting his full 1989 season together, that makes Roger just 4-8. It's odd that I've used this rare season for McDowell where he didn't win many games (And also lose so many). However, that's not to say he wasn't effective, even before the trade.
He'd appeared in 69 games in '89, the second most of his career, up to that point. Also, Roger had finished 56 of those 69 appearances, a career best at the time. The 4-8 record is really the only problem in McDowell's first set of stats!
