Joe Benz, but Never Breaks in 1911, Part 1

Joe Benz was in the minor leagues as a 23-year-old in 1909. Pitching for Newark of "D" Ball in 1909, he pitched 21 games and played another twelve in the outfield. Joe wasn't a good hitter, batting .202. Pitching, though, was his forte. Benz was 10-7 that season, then 12-10 with Green Bay ("C"). Making the jump to "A" Ball in 1911, Joe Benz was 10-10 for a team that was dead last (49-113). That August, the American League Chicago White Sox purchased his contract. Joe's days in the minors were over after less than three seasons.

So, how'd the rookie do in the Pale Hose? He took the mound in the mound on the eleventh day of August, and his team was down 8-1 to the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers were missing their 127 RBI-man Ty Cobb. In any event, in his three innings of relief of Doc White, Joe allowed just two hits and a run. Benz also fanned three and issued no walks. Put in perspective, starting pitcher White was shelled for nine hits in just five innings and Irv Young (Not related to Cy but given the nickname, "Cy The Second") surrendered four hits in the top of the ninth.

But was it all a case of beginner's luck? The next two outings were poor, and when Benz had another good day (September 2nd vs. Cleveland and Shoeless Joe Jackson) it was in another loss. However, this time, not a run touched home and not a single Cleveland batter got a hit of Joe in two innings of relief work.

After four relief outings to start his career, Joe was the starting pitcher the next day in the second game of a doubleheader. Facing the Cleveland team again in this September 2nd nightcap, Benz gave a good account of himself. But Joe Jackson and Nap Lajoie combined for five hits of him. Other than that, the rookie pitcher allowed just four hits over eight innings. He took a tough 3-1 loss. But Jackson, with a double and triple, was the only batter to get an extra base of him.

So, with that impressive performance under his belt, Benz a given a turn in the rotation. He did not disappoint. Joe Benz beat the Browns a week later for his first career win. But this was actually a relief appearance...And a long one. 8 1/3 innings. St. Louis had routed Doc White, who lasted just 2/3 of an inning, giving up four hits and two runs. Nonetheless, it was 3-2 for Chicago after one. St. Louis scored a run in the top of the second off the new pitcher to tie it, but Benz held the fort from there. The final score was 8-3 for the home team, but the game had remained tied until the last of the fifth.

The Browns got their revenge on Benz three days later, but Joe pitched well, allowing just six hits and three runs in seven innings. That loss dropped Joe's record to 1-2, but Chicago won the next three games he started. Joe himself got the win in two of them. Benz was back in the bullpen on October 4th against St. Louis. Relieving starting pitcher Jim Scott, who'd fanned eleven batters, Joe pitched a scoreless eighth. But it was the Browns who won, 2-1.

Benz made on last appearance on October 8th. He started against the Indians, but didn't make it out of the first. Doc White relieved him and ended up the winning pitcher as the White Sox came back to win big, 10-4.

Although Joe only appeared in twelve contests, he contributed for Chicago that year. Spending exactly half the time as a starter, Benz seemed to excel at each role. He finished the game in four of his six relief appearances. By contrast, however, Joe was only able to go the distance once as a starter. He was 3-2 overall.

Joe had nonetheless impressed! The White Sox must have taken notice!
