Rookie Whitlock Nearly Pitched Boston to the World Series, Part 1

Garrett Whitlock was a new face on the Boston Red Sox as the team started the 2021 season. The Sox had won it all three years earlier, but had slipped. Boston was just 84-78 the year after being on top of the world. The next season was worse, they finished a dozen games below .500 (24-36).

But a resurgence happened in '21, and a rookie relief pitcher really helped. The team was hampered by inconsistent pitching all year, plus ace Chris Sale had missed all of 2020. Sale didn't end up making it back to the team until August, going 5-1 with a 3.16 earned run average.

Sale had been important to Boston. Previously pitching for the Chicago White Sox, he carried his excellent pitching from Chicago to Boston. As a member of both Sox teams, all Chris did was go 99-59 from 2012-2018.

After pitching for the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 2016-2017, plus a stint with Chatham of the Cape Cod League in between, Garrett Whitlock was on the New York Yankees' radar. He went 18th in the 2017 amateur draft.

In the Gulf Coast league, Whitlock did not get a decision, but posted a 1.04 earned run average for the Yankee West in limited duty. This got him a promoted to the Appalachian League (Rookie level). There, the wheels came off the chariot as while Garrett won his only decision, his ERA was 7.94 in two outings. Overall, his 2018 season consisted of five games, three starts, and an earned run average of 3.77. Things got much better next year.

First, there was Whitlock's stint at Charleston of the South Atlantic League ("A" ball). 2-2 in seven games (All starts) and an ERA of just 1.13. From there, to the Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League ("A+" level). With Tampa, it was smoothing sailing for the 22-year old. 5-3, 2.44 ERA. Garrett didn't stay there too long, as he was promoted again to the "AA" level. He only pitched twice for Trenton of the Eastern League, but looked awesome. 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA. The future looked bright.

Whitlock stayed with Trenton until July of 2019. He'd been having a pretty good year, 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA, but then it ended. Tommy John surgery was needed on his right (pitching) arm. Garrett's season was over. And due to the recovery needed and Covid-19, Whitlock spent all of 2020 not pitching.

But this didn't stop Garrett Whitlock from his dream. 2021 was a new year, and he was ready. Before 2020 ended, Garrett got some good news. The Boston Red Sox acquired him in the Rule Five draft. A new home, and this team was impressed with Garrett. When the '21 season started, Whitlock was on the Boston Red Sox' roster. There would be no riding the buses that season.

In the Red Sox third game of the season, the new reliever made his MLB debut. It went well. 3 1/3 innings pitched of shutout ball vs. Baltimore. By the end of May, his earned run average was good, yet his wins-losses record was just 0-1. Not exactly looking promising as far as a earning a place on my list, right?

How fitting it was that Garrett Whitlock's first major league win was against the very team that drafted him, the Yankees. However, the June 5th win came after Whitlock blew the save. His next win was more impressive. He pitched two shutout innings, fanned three, and was in the win column as Boston topped Toronto, 6-5 on June 11th. Before the month ended, Garrett upped his win total to three.

Although Whitlock recorded just one win in July, for the second straight month, he didn't lose a game. His strong pitching in that month saw him post an earned run average of just 0.75 in eight appearances (And twelve innings pitched).

Garrett went 2-1 in August, and by September 11th, had upped his win-loss record to 8-3 when he beat the Chicago White Sox. This proved to be his last regular season win for Boston. But the good news was that, thanks to Garrett Whitlock's 8-4 record, the Red Sox qualified for the postseason with a 92-72 record.

Garrett ended up making 46 appearances for Boston. His eight wins topped all Red Sox relievers. With the starting pitching not very good, Boston relied heavily on their relievers that year. It showed as closer Matt Barnes won six games, Adam Ottavino won seven and Hirokazu Sawamura (Another outstanding rookie) won five.

Garrett only ended up finishing eleven of his outings, but when the smoke cleared at the end of 2021, Whitlock was ahead of all Boston Red Sox relievers in innings pitched (73 1/3). Not bad for a 25-year old rookie.
