Alejandro Really Brought Some Pain-Yah to Batters in 1988, Part 1

Alejandro Pena was quite a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers in that 1980s. It seemed right from the start he was destined to help.

When Pena joined Los Angeles in 1981, they were on their was to a World Series. They had the rookie, Fernando Valenzuela who won thirteen games. But he had Jerry Reuss, Burt Hooton and Bob Welch, too. Pena was only 1-1 in fourteen appearances, but was on the postseason roster in October, pitching twice against Montreal in the National League Championship Series.

From there, it appeared Alejandro might be part of the team as a starter. After a disappointing season in 1983, he won twelve games as a starter in '83 and 1984. '84 was especially encouraging as he 12-6 with a National League-leading 2.48 ERA. Pena also topped the NL in shutouts with four. But from there, his form went away.

Pena was 0-1 in 1985, and 1-2 in 1986. In '87 Pena was again a non-contributor despite an earned run average of 3.50. That was his last year as a starter.

The 1988 Los Angeles Dodgers weren't quite as good as the team they'd been eight years earlier. However, they had Orel Hershiser (23-8), Tim Leary (17 wins), Tim Belcher (12-6). Fernando Valenzuela was still there, but not quite the pitcher he used to be: 5-8!

How about the bullpen? There was closer Jay Howell, 5-3 with a 2.08 earned run average and 21 saves. A former closer on the New York Mets, Jesse Orosco was 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA. There was Tim Crews, a perfect 4-0. Brian Holton was 7-3 with an ERA of just 1.70.

But how about our boy?

Okay, he was only 6-7, but that doesn't tell the whole story. Okay, so he wasn't the closer. Howell was, as mentioned. Still, Alejandro Pena finished his share of games. And he led the Dodgers' bullpen in appearances (60). He still managed to finish 31 games, as Howell led the team with 38. So Alejandro was right there with Jay. Pena also topped the bullpen in innings with 94.1 (Howell had just 65.0).

More importantly, both Howell and Pena were able to finish what Hershiser, Belcher and Leary started. Valenzuela wasn't going to pitch in the postseason, but Los Angeles added a veteran in John Tudor! The bullpen depth would come in handy that postseason as you will see in my next blog!
