Monge Was Amazing In 1979, Wasn't He? Part 2

Sid Monge's four seasons prior to 1979 had been good, but not great. He'd never really had the chance to close from his rookie season of 1975 to 1978. However, that was not to say he hadn't been effective (But Monge's wins above replacement in that span was never higher than 0.3). He recorded four saves in '77 and another six in 1978. '78 was also Sid's first great earned run average season (2.76). Could he improved on that the next year?

Given the closer's role with Cleveland in 1979, he flourished. Though Victor Cruz had been excellent in Toronto in 1978, going 7-3 with nine saves plus an excellent earned run average of just 1.71, he'd be pushed out of that spot when he arrived with the Tribe in '79. Our man Monge was just that good. Cruz picked up another ten saves in '79, but it was Monge who was Mr. Closer that season.

You see Victor Cruz's ERA was over four, and Sid Monge's was just 2.40. Sid won ten games and Vic went just 3-9. Cruz picked up just two holds and Monge had five. Sid had arrived!

Monge fanned 108 batters over his 131 innings of work with the Indians, for a career-best 7.4 K/9. All this and a 1.221. walks and hits allowed per inning led to another career best: 3.0 wins above replacement!

Monge continued his effectiveness, but his 1980 season was a disappointment. Although he saved another fourteen games, he matched a total from '79 that wasn't so good: Seven blown saves!

And Sid's ERA shot up to 3.53. His buddy Victor Cruz actually improved from '79 to '80 as he added twelve saves of his own and lowered his earned run average to 3.45. But oddly enough, it was Cruz who was traded to Pittsburgh in the offseason and Monge who stayed. Monge was able to go just 3-5 in 1981, which was his exact same record in '80.

So Sid was gone, too, after 1981. He was 7-1 with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1982. The next season, he started 3-0 with Philly, then went 7-3 (Adding seven saves) with San Diego to finish the campaign strong. Despite his 10-3 record, Sid Monge's ERA had climbed. It had been 6.94 with the Phillies and he missed his chance to pitch in the Fall Classic that year.

Monge would pitch one more seasons in the bigs, going 3-1 with San Diego and Detroit in 1984. He spent 1985 in Nashville ("AAA"), going 4-4 with eight saves and a 3.64 earned run average. But instead of getting called up, Sid was traded to Pittsburgh, just like Victor Cruz had been years earlier. But neither was getting back to the bigs (Cruz was 1-2 with an ERA over seven in "AAA" ball in '85). After going 1-0 with Hawaii ("AAA") with a 4.66 ERA the rest of the seasons, Monge hung 'em up.
