Watt a Year Eddie Had in 1969, Part 1

Eddie Watt was a reliever who was on a team that had four pretty good starters almost every year he pitched. The Baltimore Orioles of 1971 featured four twenty-game winners (Mike Cuellar, Jim Palmer, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson). Two years earlier, the O's won 103 games in the first year of League Championship Series play.

Baltimore had Cuellar winning 23 in 1969. McNally won 20. Jim Palmer was 16-4 and Tom Phoebus went 14-7. But, great as that staff was, the bullpen picked up the slack when one of them couldn't go nine. The fifth starter, Jim Hardin, was only 6-7, tossing just 137 2/3 innings that season.

So a more-than adequate bullpen was needed.

It was a good thing Eddie Watt pitched so well that season for the O's. Eddie was not alone, as you had Dick Hall, Dave Leonhard, Marcelino Lopez and Pete Richert there. These men were effective, as was Al Severinsen, who appeared in just twelve games for Baltimore in '69, but posted a 2.29 earned-run average.

Eddie Watt was 28 years old the season Baltimore won their first pennant under Earl Weaver. Three years earlier, in 1966, the team had won it all under Hank Bauer. However, this team, in the last year of the 1960s, seemed destined to turn their one World Series-winning season into a dynasty.

Watt was a rookie that 1966 season, going 9-7. It was a good start for him. But from the start of his professional baseball career, it was apparent Eddie was going to be good. Pitching for Appleton at the "D" level (Midwestern League) in 1962, his record was only 11-11, but his ERA was 2.76. The next year, now with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Northern League ("A" level), Eddie Watt was just 10-12. But again, look at his earned-run average. It was good, 3.14.

So good, that his stock was rising. Back with Aberdeen in '64, Eddie dominated. 14 wins, just one loss, and a 1.77 ERA. Watt was so good, he'd meet up with his future Baltimore manager, Earl Weaver that year. With Elmira of the Eastern League ("AA" level), he was 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA. Weaver no doubt liked what he saw in the 23-year old kid. He would manage him in the bigs by 1968.

But Earl was just seeing the beginning here. Back with Elmira in 1965, more progress for Watt. In his first start, he threw a no-no. A good omen of what was to come. Would you believe it, he ended up with another no-hitter two starts later. Eddie was just too good for Double-A ball. His record was an impressive 7-2 and his earned-run average was great, 1.85. A call-up to the Rochester Red Wings, and suddenly, Watt had advanced to Triple-A. There, he finished the '65 season. The new pitcher in the International League went 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA.

Watt's good fortune continued in 1966. He defied the odds and made the big-league club. The Orioles were on their way to winning the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers that season, and Eddie started out well. By August, he had nine wins and only three losses. When tendinitis stuck down pitcher Steve Barber, Watt was now in the starting rotation. Although Eddie had pitched effectively in relief that season (He was 6-1 with four saves and two holds before getting just his second start on July 19), he'd had much success in the minor leagues as a starting pitcher.

It started off well. Eddie Watt beat Detroit 13-3 in the second start. Then he split his next two starts, upping his win-loss record to an excellent 8-2. By August 14th, it was 9-3. However as fate would have it, Eddie never won another game that season, nor did he ever reach double figures in W's in one major league season.

The August 14th start was excellent. Eight innings two hits, no runs, and an easy 6-0 win. But in his next start, Watt faced four batters. He failed to get a single one out. The next two stats saw Watt pitch exactly 4 1/3 innings and take the loss. September's first three starts were mixed success as Eddie posted a 4.08 earned run average in the three outings (Going 0-1 in them). The Orioles decided to put him back in the bullpen. Watt lost his only relief decision in September, bringing his final record of 1966 to just 9-7.

Baltimore won the World Series, and Watt did not pitch in the Fall Classic despite being named to the postseason roster. The Orioles relied on the pitching of Dave McNally, Jim Palmer, Wally Bunker and reliever Moe Drabowski to win the October Classic against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was impressive as the scores were 5-2, 6-0, 1-0, 1-0. Palmer, Bunker and McNally hurled consecutive shutouts as the Dodgers were held scoreless for the last 33 innings of the 1966 World Series. The sweep of the Los Angeles would be the first-ever World Series triumph for the Baltimore Orioles' franchise, which had previously been the St. Louis Browns from 1902 to 1953. The team had only once played in a World Series, back in 1944. So this was an unexpected first for the franchise. However, the Baltimore Orioles would struggle to regain their 1966 form the next two years, but through no fault of their new reliever. Eddie was just 3-5 and 5-5 in 1967 and '68 respectively. However, his earned run average was excellent both seasons, meaning it was probably the Orioles bad play that contributed to his mediocre won-loss record.

1969 was different. The Baltimore Orioles were going back to the World Series. They lost to the upstart New York Mets there, but Eddie Watt contributed. He matched his 1968 win total, but this time lost only two games. Watt allowed just 49 hits in 71 innings pitched. He nearly matched his career-best appearances set in 1968 as Eddie appeared in 56 games. Of those, he finished 41. Of all the pitchers on the Baltimore relief corps, only Dave Leonhard pitched more innings (94). However, Leonhard started three games, and had just ten games finished.

Maltzberger, Hyde, Konstanty, Duren, Brosnan, Tekulve and Henke all wore glasses.
