For Pete's Sake, Part 2

In 1970, Pete Richert was a big reason Baltimore won the World Series. For more of his 1970 stats, click here. But, just a bit of a spoiler for you: They get even better than just the win total and appearance!

Richert had the best earned run average (1.98) of any Orioles relief pitcher in '70. Not that the others were slouches. You had Marcelino Lopez, 2.08. You had Dick Hall, 3.08. You had Eddie Watt, 3.25. Moe Drabowsky had a high ERA (3.78), but that doesn't take into account his full season. Earlier, Moe had posted an earned run average of just 3.28 for Kansas. So his season of 1970 finished with an ERA of 3.52. Drabowsky also won five games and saved three. He'd won eleven games and saved eleven more in 1969 for the Royals. So it was sort of a an offseason by his standards. But Moe got into two World Series games vs. the Cincinnati Royals and posted a 2.70 earned run average.

Another reliever whose numbers failed to match up to previous campaigns was Dave Leonhard. He'd been 7-7 with a 3.13 ERA in 1968. The next year was even better: 7-4, 2.49! But Dave dipped in 1970. He didn't win a single game and posted a high earned run average of 5.08. Like Moe Drabowsky, he'd bounce back in 1971. It wasn't easy. A strong spring meant only a job at the "AAA" level. Come July, Dave was back with Baltimore. Although 2-3, his ERA was 2.83 for the Orioles in 1971.

It came down to Eddie Watt and Pete Richert, though, for the closer role. Watt, if you recall, made my list for 1969, here and here. Watt had gone 5-2 with 16 saves and a great ERA in '69, 1.65. The following year, he saved another dozen games. On the negative side, Eddie blew seven save attempts. However, Watt also won seven games. His win-loss record was 7-7. The blown saves, the win one, lose one record and ERA didn't mean that manager Earl Weaver soured on him. Eddie appeared in 53 games compared to Pete Richert's 50. And Watt was not finished, as he came back in 1971 to post an earned run average of 1.82.

Richert picked up three holds in '70, although that was less than Watt's total (six). Pete blew only four saves. Richert was second on the Orioles' relief corps with a 1.098 WHIP. Only Dick Hall's 0.929 was better.

It actually astonishes me the that Baltimore had so many good relievers that championship season of 1970. Their starters were so good. Jim Palmer won 20 games. Mike Cuellar and Dave McNally were actually better. They each won 24 games. Jim Hardin and Tom Phoebus weren't too bad either. But Hardin was just 6-5 despite an ERA of 3.53. Phoebus was just 5-5 with a 3.07 earned run average.

But how about Richert coming in to close? That 1.98 earned run average was enlightening. But another reason to bring Pete in were two other numbers. First, he fanned 66 batters in just 54 2/3 innings, for 10.9 strikeouts per nine. Second, Richert gave up just 36 hits in 54 2/3 innings. That's 5.9 hits allowed per nine. No other Orioles pitcher had a better K per nine than Pete Richert in 1970. No other Baltimore reliver had a lower hits per nine than Richert.

Another stat that shows Richert's value is his Wins Above Replacement. Remarkably enough, Pete's was third best among all pitchers on Baltimore that season. Richert's 2.3 was only slightly less than 24-game winner Mike Cuellar. Two other starters, albeit each started just 21 and 19 games each (Tom Phoebus, Jim Hardin) had WAR numbers of just 1.2 and 1.3. Eddie Watt's Wins Above Replacement was just 1.1.

Richert returned to the Orioles in 1971, but was not quite so effective. He won three, lost five and recorded just four saves. His ERA climbed to 3.47. The Orioles, however, were still a strong team. They finished in first place in the American League East. Their 101 wins was matched by the best in the West, Oakland.

When the two teams met in the 1971 ALCS, the Orioles were just a little bit better. A sweep, but games one and three were close. Baltimore scored exactly five runs in each contest, winning them 5-3, 5-1, and 5-3. It was on to Pittsburgh for the final showdown.

When the World Series rolled around, Baltimore was making their third straight appearance and fourth in six seasons. Things got off on the right foot. The O's, playing at home, took the first two contests, 5-3 and 11-3. But, the Pittsburgh Pirates went home and fought back. Their pitching came together. The Pirates won three straight at Three Rivers Stadium. Back home at Memorial Stadium, Baltimore and Pittsburgh went ten innings, and the home team stopped the bleeding with a 3-2 win, walk-off style.

Game seven could have gone either way. Roberto Clemente hit a home run for Pittsburgh. Despite that, starter Mike Cuellar was awesome. He went the distance for Baltimore and held Pittsburgh to just one other run. But it proved to be a big one. Willie Stargell had started the top of the eighth inning with a single. When Jose Pagan doubled, it was 2-0, Pirates. The Orioles finally pried a run loose in the last of the inning, but that was all the home team scored off Steve Blass, who finished with a fine four-hitter (Cuellar allowed just four hits himself over eight frames). The 2-1 closed out a great World Series.

Pete Richert got into only game four, retiring the only two batters he faced. This ended up being his last appearance on the mound in an Orioles' uniform. Frank Robinson and Richert were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deal that saw Doyle Alexander join the Orioles. Richert bounced back in 1972. He won only two games, but posted an earned run average of just 2.25 in 37 appearances. He saved six games. Though his ERA climbed to 3.18 in 1972, Pete saved another seven contests. His last season was 1973, split between St. Louis and Philadelphia. That earned run average was again where Pete wanted it at, 2.27. Alas, he saved just one game. But in the offseason, a blood clot was discovered in his left (pitching) arm. This ended his career as a pitcher. But he stayed in the game.

Pete would work as an analyst for the World Series in the coming years. And he founded "Athletes For Youth." His work on the diamond did not end with his retirement from the mound. He'd pop up in the California League and Pacific Coast League. He was at one point a general manager, and he'd have stints as a pitching coach from the late 1980s to early 2000s.
