Smith Helped Brooklyn To A Pennant In 1920, Part 1

The Brooklyn Robins were on their way to the World Series in 1920. They'd had four previous pennants, but it appeared as if they might have a dynasty as the Roaring Twenties began.

One thing the Robins didn't lack that year was pitching. Be it the starters or bullpen. One such reliever / spot starter was Sherry Smith. Smith had been in the big leagues since 1911, and might have seemed like the wrong choice for bullpen duty.

It's just that Smith was a pretty good starter, too. In 1910, his first year as a professional, he pitched on two teams, neither of whom were part of the majors. First came his time in the Carolina Association. With Greensboro (This was "D" level), Sherry's stay there lasted just three games (And a 1-2 record). The team ended up releasing him before the end of the season. Smith then finished the season with Jacksonville of the South Atlantic League ("C" level). He made a dozen appearances there. But the best thing to happen to Sherry Smith in 1910 happened on September 1st. The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed him in the Rule Five Draft. And it would not be long until Sherry Smith made it to prime time.

It was brief, but significant that Sherry Smith began his major league career as a reliever. Though he didn't impress in four appearances with the Pirates covering the 1911 and 1912 season, it was nonetheless Smith's first taste of major league action.

In the minors, it was a different story. Sherry was a starter. He won nine games with Greenwood of the Cotton States League ("D" level) in 1911 and posted a great earned run average, 2.74. The next year, Smith won eighteen games with the Springfield Reapers of the Central League ("B" level).

The next two seasons were spent at the "B" and "AA" level by Sherry. But progress was indeed made. He went 9-2 with Grand Rapids in 1913, and 5-3 at Louisville. In 1914, Smith pitched exclusively with the Newark Indians of the International League. While he was able to merely compile a record of 8-12, his earned run average was 3.50.

That September, another Rule Five Draft saw Sherry Smith acquired from Newark by the Brooklyn Robins of the National League. Our boy really never looked back.

Pitching the sixth game of the 1915 season for Brooklyn, their new pitcher found himself playing in an American League venue. Their opposition, the Boston Braves, were playing at Fenway Park, for the time being. It was a bad start, but Sherry Smith quickly rebounded. When the year ended, the newcomer was one of six pitchers on Brooklyn to start thirteen or more games and post an earned run average below three (2.59). Another starter, Ed Appleton, posted an ERA of 3.32, despite going 4-10. So this Brooklyn Robins team had a tremendous array of pitching talent. Sherry finished the year 14-8, and Brooklyn finished above .500 for the first time since 1903.

Now, could the newbie proved this wasn't all just a fluke? Well, no. Smith came back with 14 more wins and an earned run average of just 2.34. The Robins were on their way to a pennant.

The World Series was Brooklyn vs. Boston. The Red Sox had their prized lefty Babe Ruth to oppose Sherry Smith in game two. The contest was a classic, with Ruth narrowly winning by the score of 2-1 in fourteen innings. Boston ultimatley ended up winning the Fall Classic in just five games.

Smith himself wasn't quite as good the next year, but still won a dozen games and posted an earned run average of 3.32. Sadly, Sherry's career was about to be interrupted. He was drafted into the first World War. As a result, Smith missed all of 1918.

And it was Brooklyn who missed their pitcher. The Robins won just 56 games in 1918. The team improved the next year, finishing about .500 (69-71). Sherry Smith was only able to go 7-12 despite an excellent ERA, 2.24.

1920 marked some changes for the team. They went with a four-man rotation, which meant Al Mamaux and Sherry Smith would be spot starters / relievers. Mamaux and Smith had both been successful starters, so there must have been some griping on their part why they were not part of the regular rotation.

But, both pitchers turned in fine years. They each ended up with more wins than Hall-Of-Famer Rube Marquard did that year. Rube started 26 games and won only ten of them. Plus he posted an earned run average over three. The same could not be said about Sherry Smith and Al Mamaux. Smith went 11-9 with an 1.85 ERA . Mamaux went 12-8, with an earned run average of just 2.69.

It seemed like Brooklyn had an edge on the rest of the National League in 1920. Four pretty good regular starters, two superb spot starters. And there was the bullpen of Clarence Mitchell, George Mohart, and Johnny Miljus.

Mitchell spent about half the time (Seven games) starting as relieving (twelve games). The Robins had been impressed with Clarence the player, too. There was some serious talk of having Mitchell play first base. However, Clarence was too valuable on the mound! He went 5-2 with a 3.09 ERA. Mohart only appeared in thirteen games (Just one start), but posted an excellent earned run average of 1.77. Miljus appeared in only nine games, all in relief. But still, when Johnny went out, he ruled. Miljus finished eight games, won his only decision, and had an earned run average of just 3.09. Years later, he'd emerge as the bullpen ace on the pennant-winning 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates

Clarence Mitchell got one save, but it was the two spot starters who had three apiece. Sherry Smith and Al Mamaux also finished sixteen games each. The fine efforts of Smith, Mamaux, Mitchell, George Mohart and Johnny Miljus helped Brooklyn win 94 games in 1920.
