Walsh The Rookie Fireman Of 1904! Part 1

Ed Walsh was far from a Hall-Of-Fame career as he pitched for the Chicago White Sox in 1904. It happened to be his rookie season. But he only started eight of his eighteen appearances. No matter. Big Ed found a way to contribute.

Impressive as it was, he couldn't crack the starting rotation even after a pretty good year in 1905, too. Walsh finally made it as a starter in 1906, but it could be argued had he not been so good his first two seasons, Chicago might have given up on him. Good thing they didn't. Ed was outstanding on the mound in the 1906 World Series against the crosstown rivals the Cubs.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves here.

Walsh was 6-3 in '04 (He upped it to 8-3 the next season, but started 13 games). His ERA was just 2.60. But what was most impressive about Ed's season? He finished all ten of his appearances out of the Chicago White Sox's bullpen. So he was (Despite a low save total) the team's closer. This part of Ed's career was crucial. When he wasn't starting in Hall-Of-Fame career, he was finishing the other starters' games. Walsh ended up leading the league in saves six times.
