Henry Fits The Bill As The Cubs Closer In 1959, Part 1

Bill Henry tried to make it as a starter on the Boston Red Sox for four seasons, then wasn't even at the big league level from 1956 to 1957. Back as a Chicago Cub in 1958, he saved six, won five and posted a good ERA, 2.88.

1959 was more a season to remember if you're thinking about Elroy Face (18-1) or Ryne Duren (32 consecutive scoreless innings) or even Gerry Staley among closers. How does our boy fit in? Not quite at their level, but too far from it. Henry actually led the National League appearances with 65 in '59. Plus, he ended up pitching more innings that season than the aforementioned threesome.

And Bill was on his way to a long career (Which ended in 1969) as a top-notch reliever. And as for his spot as a closer, he held it even after a move to the Cincinnati Reds the next season. Bill continued on in that role until 1964.
