Russell Rushes To The Rescue Of Texas In 1989, Part 1!

Jeff Russell tried for most of the early to mid-1980s to make it as a starter in baseball. Jeff ended up leading the National League in losses in 1984 with 18. The Cincinnati Reds were through with him. The Texas Rangers actually had him working out of the bullpen in 1986 and '87 and he had some success. The big guy (6 '4) was not able to land the closer spot, however, and was back starting in 1988. There, he actually harnessed his stuff and went a respectable 10-9 with a 3.82 ERA.

The next year, Russell was given the ball as the Rangers' closer, and he ran with it.

To say Jeff's 1989 campaign was great was an understatement!
