The St. Louis Cardinals turned to Barney Schultz in the 1964 season to get them to the World Series, and the 38 year old delivered. He'd come a long way from his days with the Chicago Cubs.
The 1964 Cardinals had gotten Lou Brock in a trade from the Chicago Cubs, too. Schultz had made his was to St. Louis the previous season in a deal for Leo Burke. Barney went 2-0 with a save the rest of the year with his new team in 1963, but it was the Los Angeles Dodgers who made it.
The next year was different. It seemed like Philadelphia, and then Cincinnati would face the great New York Yankees in the Fall Classic, but then they both ended up going cold during a crucial stretch of the season.
Barney was saving games left, right and centre, and he finished the campaign with 14 saves and an ERA of 1.64. The World Series, while won by Barney's team, was a disappointment. The Yankees routed him from the mound in just about all his appearances. Mickey Mantle hit a walk-off against Schultz to win game three. His ERA was 18.00.
Like some on my list, the good times for Barney didn't last much beyond his great season that makes my list. Nonetheless, in one of the most thrilling pennant races ever, he enjoyed many a great moment.
