Coumbe Was Cleveland's Bullpen Ace In 1917, Part 1

Fritz Coumbe seemed destined to be good reliever almost from the start. In 1914, he arrived in Boston on a loaded Red Sox team. They were loaded with starting pitchers, so they'd soon not need Coumbe.

That was unfortunate. Imagine being on a team that had Ray Collins, Ernie Shore, Smokey Joe Wood, Rube Foster and Dutch Leonard. Now that was one starting five to be reckoned with! No team could the next year as Boston won it all.

Their new bullpen ace, a 24-year old rookie, was not around for the champagne, alas. Fritz was only 1-2, but his earned run average was just 1.44. That's great, but look at the reality of the situation, as in the starting five's win-loss record in '14:

Collins: 20-13

Leonard: 19-5

Foster: 14-8

Shore: 10-5

Wood: 10-3

And...Boston had some kid named Babe Ruth, 2-1. He was a good hitter, too. This resulted in Fritz getting traded to Cleveland, where he found a home. Although he finished his rookie season only 2-7, his ERA was very good. In his first full seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Fritz was 4-7, but started twelve games and finished fourteen of the contests he relieved.

Then came 1916.

Cleveland was much improved. They'd won just 51 games in 1914, and only 57 the next season. They made it all the way to .500 in 1916, 77-77. One of the big reasons was their pitching. And here, we not about to overlook their bullpen / spot starter ace!

The Indians' starting pitching in '16 was quite good. Jim Bagby (Whose son would later win 97 major league games himself) was just 16-17 in his first full season but showed a lot of promise. There was Stan Coveleski (Fifteen wins), Guy Morton (12-6) and Fred Beebe (5-3, but with a strong 2.41 ERA)

Coumbe even had company in the bullpen. Good company!

Ed Klepfer was 6-6. Al Gould was 5-6. Otis Lambeth was 4-4. However, all three of these men had earned run averages below three in 1916. Topping them all was Fritz Coumbe. He won seven games (And yes, lost five) started thirteen games, relieving another sixteen contests. Coumbe finished eight of his sixteen relief outings, and he was just getting warmed up! Well, not literally!

The next season saw Cleveland win 88 games and Fritz make a huge contribution out of the 'pen. The previous season it had been close, with Fritz Coumbe the slight best. In 1917, Fritz did his best to distance himself from the rest of the bullpen. For starters, he relieved 24 times compared to just ten starts. He upped his win total to eight (Again, Fritz lost his share of contest, six). However, Otis Lambeth couldn't top that, going 7-6. Otis started ten games but was second on the team in relief outings, with sixteen.

Fritz finished fifteen of his 24 appearances, and topped 'em all in the Indians' bullpen with 134 1/3 innings pitched. Coumbe's most impressive performance in relief was on September 9th in Chicago, as Fritz relieved Stan Coveleski, who walked the first batter of the game, and went nine strong innings and the contest remained a 3-3 tie through regulation. Coumbe allowed two early runs, then was great the rest of the game, finishing with a six-hitter. Sadly, the visiting team forfeited the game, making a winner (His tenth) out of a previous entry on this list, Dave Danforth. Coumbe, meanwhile, was tagged with an undeserved loss.
