To Hall With Batter In 1964, Part 1

Dick Hall wasn't a bad starter, but it just didn't seem to be his destiny. The Baltimore Orioles ace reliever had been a starter over in the National League his first year, in 1955. He was 6-6 in fifteen games, thirteen of which were starts. But Hall followed that by going 0-7 in '56, and not winning another big-league game until 1960 with Kansas City. That year saw Dick go 8-13, which was not bad.

So Baltimore got him in 1961, and he improved to 7-5 with an earned run average of just 3.09. He started thirteen games and relieved sixteen. The end result was Dick Hall's first winning season (7-5). Less starts, just six, followed in 1962 with the Orioles, but Hall was still good: 6-6! After going 5-5 in '63, Dick Hall put it all together for 1964.

And that impressive, because the Orioles of 1964 had a stacked bullpen. There was closer Stu Miller, who had a win-loss record of only 7-7. The was Mr. 12-inning no-hitter, Harvey Haddix, just 5-5. There was a reliever that had been traded named Wes Stock. Stock had an outstanding 1963 season, going 7-0. He was 2-0 with Baltimore the next season, but was shipped out to Kansas City, where he went 6-3 to finish 1964 8-3.

Hall got into 45 games in 1964, but had nearly 90 innings, so he was often expected to get six outs. He tied Haddix for second on the team in games finished, 28. For Hall, who unlike Haddix had never had much success as a starter, it was a then-career high in GF. It was also Dick's first year since 1957 where he was stickily a reliever in the bigs, meaning his innings pitched were the lowest they been since 1959, when Hall had pitched just 8 2/3.
