To Hall With The Batter, Part 2

So Dick Hall wasn't the closer on the 1964 Baltimore Orioles, but he and Harvey Haddix got their share of saves. Both Dick and Harvey got nine each, which was way back of Stu Miller's team-leading 22.

But where Hall has both Haddix and Miller beat is earned run average. His previous best was 2.28 in 1962, but just two years later, it was 1.85. This helped Dick Hall have a wins above replacement of 3.0. That was topps among Baltimore relievers.

And how about compared to the starters? The veteran Robin Roberts was tied with Milt Pappas for team-leading 3.5 among hurlers. Wally Bunker was 3.4 and then there was Hall, ahead of Harvey Haddix!

Curiously enough, Dick and Harvey were both nine for eleven in save conversions. However, saves is not really what Haddix and Hall were trying for in this 1964 season. Actually, you've probably wondered where Hoyt Wilhelm was when all this was going down in Baltimore in 1964? Well, Hoyt was now on the Chicago White Sox and pitching great.

Hall was essentially his replacement. Wilhelm, you see, hadn't just been a closer. Old Sarge won twelve games for Chicago in 1964, and posted an ERA of just 1.99. Hall had an earned run average a little better, as you can see. Hall was a bit of a veteran at thirty-four. Wilhelm was forty-one himself.

And Wilhelm would continue on pitching into the 1970s. Hall lasted until 1971 himself (Dick was 41), getting a ring with Baltimore in 1966 and '70. His nine wins in '64 were a career-best at the time, but he'd twice win ten games in the coming years and eleven in 1965.

Dick Hall only fanned an average of 5.3 per 9 (He did improved to 7.6 K/9 the next season), he posted an excellent 0.844 walks and hits allowed per innings pitched. Five seasons later, Hall had appeared to be a so-so season (5-2, 6 saves) notwithstanding his excellent earned run average (1.92). However, another sub-1.000 WHIP (0.883). When Dick Hall retired after the 1971 World Series vs. his old team (Pittsburgh) he'd ended up with four seasons of sub-1.000 WHIP.
