Conzelman Was The Top Pirate Relief Pitcher in 1914, Part 2

So, Joe Conzelman was only 5-6 in 1914 with Pittsburgh. That's not enough for a spot on my list, is it? But what about Joe's other stats in his first full season at the major league level?

The man hailing from Bristol, Connecticut deserved to be the top Buc in '14. The year before, Conzelman had posted a 1.20 earned run average in three appearances with Pittsburgh. Two of them were starts.

In 1914, his rookie season, Joe ERA climbed to 2.94, but it was still respectable. Among "Firsts" for him that season, Conzelman recorded a shutout in one of his nine starts. However, we are here to talk about his bullpen duties that season, right?

Conzelman fanned 39 batters in his 101 innings of work. No other Pirate reliever averaged more than Joe's 3.5 K per 9. Al Mamaux was the only Pittsburgh relief pitcher to have a better WHIP than Joe Conzelman's 1.267. Joe would pick up his only two saves in the bigs in 1914.

But it was Al Mamaux's who went to pitch in the majors until 1924. Joe wasn't so lucky. His numbers in 1915 weren't bad. In fact, he started the season with Pittsburgh, and was 1-1 by mid-August with a 3.42 earned run average. The Pirates were a little better than in 1914. They'd won only 69 games that season. In '15, Pittsburgh won 73 games. Conzelman was joined in the bullpen by a pitcher who didn't appear enough to be a rookie, Carmen Hill. But Hill appeared in eight games and posted an ERA even better than Conzelman, 1.15. The 19-year old was back with the parent club the next season, while Joe Conzelman was back in the minors by the end of 1915.

And Joe's numbers weren't bad with the Indianapolis Indians ("AA" level). Joe was just 4-4 in 10 appearances, but as had been the case in the major leagues, the opposition found him tough to hit against. In 75 innings of work, the opposition got just 56 hits.

In Joe Conzelman's three season in the bigs, he never gave up more than a hit an inning, and his performance in 1915 in the minors should have seen him right back with Pittsburgh (Or another major league team) the next season. But it didn't happen. There seems to be no record of Joe Conzelman ever pitching professional baseball again. His career was short, but enough to get on my list.
