Greatness Was Always In The Cards for Hrabosky in 1975, Part 2

So what is my further proof of Al Hrabosky belonging on my list for his great '75 season. For starters (Well, we are talking about the closer on St. Louis here) Al saved 22 games.

But, we need perspective. The Cardinals bullpen of 1975 had, in addition to Hrabosky, Mike Garman (Ony 3-8 but with a 2.39 earned run average), John Curtis (Who doubled as a starter that season), Greg Terlecky (This was his only MLB season), and Elias Sosa. Sosa's time as a bullpen ace would come in 1979 with the Montreal Expos. Here, his ERA was 3.95.

Garman saved ten games himself, but had a win-loss record of just 8-9. Al Hrabosky was 13-3. Earned run average-wise, Al was in a class by himself on St. Louis that year. The only other member of the Cardinal's bullpen that came close to him was Mike Garman.

Garman, who saved ten games himself in '75, had six blown saves. Hrabosky had six blown saves himself, but converted 78.6 percent compared to Garman's 62.5.

But how about a comparison to Al's counterpart in the other league? Goose Gossage. Goose had an outstanding 8.2 Wins Above Replacement, one of the all-time highest WAR in one season for a relief pitcher. It was was Goosage's coming out party that season, too. He ended the year with 26 saves, but he blew only five for a S% of 83.9.

Hrabosky had a WAR of 3.9 himself in 1975. That's nowhere near Gossage's. But Al's earned run average was very low (1.66) compared to Goose's 1.84. Of course, the American League reliever had to face the designated hitter.

Al didn't exactly fade after one season. His ERA nearly doubled the next season, to 3.30. But, Hrabosky stayed steady. He won eight games in 1976, adding thirteen saves. But Al didn't hit the 20 saves mark again until 1978. He'd traveled a bit, but Al was still in Missouri. Only now, he was pitching to the designated hitters! His first year in Kansas City saw him eight in '78 and post an earned run average of 2.88. He pitched well in three outings of the American League Championship Series vs. the New York Yankees, but it was the Bronx Bombers that went on to the World Series.

Hrabosky was only with the Royals for two years, but he won nine games in 1979. From there, it was on to Atlanta where after a so-so 1980 (4-2, 3.62 earned run average), Al found it again. The strike-shortened 1981 season was splendid. All the veteran southpaw did was go 1-1 with an ERA of 1.07.

But just like it looked like he'd found some staying power away from St. Louis, Al struggled. His earned run average went up to 5.54 in 1982, and was released in August. Although he signed wit the Chicago White Sox and pitched in the minors for them in 1983 (Even returning to the starter role), a return to the big league never happened.

Although his playing career was over, Al's heart was still in the game. And it was back to St. Louis where the colourful character appropriately became a colourful commentator. Colour commentator. Today, he has his own radio show in St. Louis and continues to work for both the Cardinals and Fox Sports Midwest.
