The Reasons to See Oakland in 1968 Was Segui, Part 2

You can forgive Diego Segui if he thought he might not pitch much in 1968.

The Cuban-born right-handed reliever had been in the big leagues since 1962, and this was his second go-around with the Athletics. Only this time they were now in Oakland. Back in '62, the A's were in Kansas City. Segui was in a tough spot in 1968.

Pitching exclusively in relief that season, the A's were trying to find ways to get him into the game. Oakland had quite bullpen that year. But when the smoked cleared, the team ended up over .500 that season, in part because of Segui.

Diego was not the closer. That was Jack Aker's job. Jack had been in the bigs since 1964. Despite getting the jump on him two seasons earlier, Segui wasn't quite ready to be the closer on the team. Jack Aker was. In 1966 he was 8-4 with a 1.99 earned run average and a American League-topping 32 saves. But Segui's time would come.

Should it have come in '68?

Aker slipped to just 4-4 in 1968 with a 4.10 ERA. It was the second straight season Jack's ERA was over four. Segui was awesome that season, however. He posted a 2.39 earned run average. Where he couldn't beat Aker in was saves. Aker had twice as many, twelve to six.

But it is interesting to note, what happed when Diego was given the ball to close. Aker converted twelve of fourteen save opportunities. But Segui converted six of seven. He was right there.

Moreover, Diego Segui's WHIP was just 1.000, far better than Jack Aker's 1.406. Segui was truly mastering his pitches that year, as he set a career-high in K/9 with 7.8. His wins above replacement was a little low, 1.3, but Diego had arrived.

He was 12-6 the next season, on a new team. The expansion Seattle Pilots witnessed their excellent pitcher save a career-best twelve games. But in 1970, it was back to Oakland. The Athletics were coming up on a dynasty that sadly, Segui would miss out on. Still, he topped the American League in earned run average in 1970, 2.56. Segui, as you can probably deduce, was back to starting some games. From there, Diego was a solid pitcher, although his last MLB season was saw him go out with a whimper, going 0-7 with the expansion Seattle Mariners (The Pilots moved to Milwaukee in 1970, so a new team was awarded to them plus Toronto in '77). With St. Louis in 1973, Segui had his finest season with the closer's job, winning seven games and saving seventeen more.

Segui's career did not end in 1977. Bouncing back with Cafeteros de Córdoba of the Mexican League ("AAA") level, the 40-year old went 18-6. Diego really rolled back the clock that year, as he pitched a no-hitter. Segui continued to pitch until he was 46, and still had enough on his pitches to go 10-9 with Leon in 1984.
