Darren O'Day has been great about the time he arrived in the big leagues back in 2008. The 26-year old was only 0-1 with a 4.57 earned run average, but things soon got better.
So the Los Angeles Angels hadn't quite like what they'd seen from him. It was from the start of O'Day's pro career that he was relieving. In 2006, pitching for the Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League, Darren was 3-1 with a 2.70 earned run average. That, along with his performance with Orem of the Rookie League (0-1, 2.51 ERA) was a sign of things to come. In all, Darren also had eight saves.
The next season saw some serious closing action for Darren O'Day. First, there was his stint with Arkansas of the Texas League ("AA" ball). Darren was only 3-4 with an ERA of 3.99. Okay, that wasn't so good. But how about O'Day's time with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League ("High A" level). Darren didn't lose a game (4-0), picked up eleven saves (To go along with the ten he got at Arkansas) and post an amazing earned run average of just 0.75. The major leagues had to be calling at this point. Before the year ended, Darren pitched for Surprise of the Arizona Fall League. There, his ERA was just 2.38.
Well, after his so-so rookie season, Los Angeles weren't too keen to keep Darren O'Day around, and this proved to be a mistake. O'Day was heading to the Bronx via the rule five draft. Actually, the New York Mets also were not too keen to keep him around. But in only three innings with New York, his earned run average was 0.00. So it was the Texas Rangers that picked up Darren O'Day on waivers.
O'Day went 2-1 with a 1.94 ERA the rest of 2009, picking up his first two major league saves. But he was just getting started. The next season saw him win six games and post an ERA of just 2.03 in 72 appearances for the Rangers.
Things seemed to go bad in 2011, as Darren went only 0-1 with an ERA over five. This marked the end of his tenure in Texas. It was off to Baltimore. And the 29-year old was amazing there in 2012. He enjoyed his best winning percentage of his career as O'Day went 7-1 in 69 appearances. He really was a winner during his time with Baltimore. And he was also making many-an-appearance. In the next three seasons, Darren pitched in exactly 68 games each year.
And O'Day was winning.
He was 5-3 in 2013. In 2014, he was 5-2 with an earned-run average of just 1.70. So this brings us to his signature season of 2015.
Up to this point, O'Day had a lifetime 25-11 record, could Darren keep it up? The answer was apparent. Darren O'Day rewarded the Baltimore Orioles for their faith in him by going 6-2, upping his lifetime wins-losses record to an amazing 31-14. But that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Zack Britton was the closer on the team. I covered him here and also (For how awesome he was in the closer role), here! But the Orioles team of six years ago had another great reliever in Darren O'Day.
O'Day had more appearances that Britton (Who appeared in 64 games himself, winning four of 'em) and nearly as many innings of work (65 1/3 for O'Day and 65 2/3 for Britton). Zack, being the closer, finished 58 games, but Darren had 19 himself.
Wait until you see what O'Day's earned run average was in '15.
