Not Your Day Against O'Day, Part 2

Darren O'Day had been putting up great numbers for years. His 2015 stats shouldn't surprise. They were superb.

O'Day had been reliable for the Baltimore Orioles since joining the team in 2012. During his first three seasons with the O's, Darren O'Day posted seventeen wins and an earned run average of just 2.05.

So, in part one on Darren, I mentioned he won six games in '15. Now, despite not being the closer on Baltimore that season, O'Day found ways to contribute.

O'Day did get his chance to close. When the smoke had cleared on his great season, Darren had six saves. The bad news is, for every save their was a blown save. Six saves converted. Five save situations not converted. However, O'Day also was credited with eighteen holds. His career high is 25, set in 2014.

The Baltimore reliever posted an excellent ERA in 2015. 1.52. This bettered his previous low of 1.70, which Darren recorded the year before. 82 strikeouts in just 65 1/3 innings is significant for O'Day. This was the first season for him over 10 K's per nine. From 2015 to 2020, Darren O'Day has averaged 11.4 K per nine innings.

Striking out all those batters helped him post his second career-low in walks and hits allowed per nine innings, too. 0.934 had been only bettered by Darren in 2010, 0.887. In the seasons following 2015, O'Day has had a WHIP of just 0.750 in 2019 and 0.796 in 2020.

Though O'Day had seasons with a wins above replacement of 2.4 three times and 2.5 in 2012, his 2015 WAR was a career-best (To date). 2.7.

Darren O'Day has continued to be an effective reliever as of 2021. His earned run average began to climb after 2015, alas. 3.77 in 2016. 3.43 in 2017. 3.60 in 2018. A new lease on life happened when Darren arrived in Atlanta in 2019, though. His earned run average was just 1.69. In a short 2020 season, O'Day went 4-0 and posted an ERA of just 1.10.

Darren then took his magic to the Bronx in 2021. The New York Yankees came calling. O'Day's first six appearances were awesome. 5 1/3 innings. The free agent looked like an excellent pickup by the Yankees. The 6'4 righty came a bit down to earth in his next few outings. In his next five appearances, O'Day was hit to the tune of three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Still, the batters were hitting just .222 when Darren was at his worse. There was an injury. His rotator cuff was strained. O'Day missed 55 games. A fine outing in Odachowski (Darren's nickname) on June 30th against the Los Angeles Angels was encouraging. Pitching at home, he entered the game in the top of the sixth. With New York up 7-4, Darren O'Day held the fort. Taylor Ward lined out. Juan Lagares grounded out. Tony Watson fanned. Thirteen pitches, three outs. And a hold for O'Day. It was his fourth of the season, having picked up ones on April 3rd and 12 vs. Toronto and a third eleven days later vs. Cleveland. Darren's fine outing against Los Angeles ended up being wasted. New York lost the game, despite being up 7-2 after one inning at home. Five days later, things didn't go so smoothly for the reliever.

The good news for the New York Yankees is that they split the July 4th doubleheader vs. their cross-town rivals the Mets. The 4-2 win in the nightcap boosted their record to a game above .500. Darren O'Day tried to help in the top of the fourth.

Entering the game with one on and one out, it was the Mets' Pete Alonso that greeted Darren with a home run. The 3-0 Yankee lead was down just 3-2. Worse still, the next two batters walked. O'Day dug deep and got ex-Toronto Blue Jay Kevin Pillar out on a grounder. Jonathan Villar took Darren to a full count, but then the New York Mets' batter fanned. The Yankees' excellent reliever had put out the fire. The Mets did not touch home again. Chad Green went three strong innings in relief of Darren O'Day and picked up his third win of the season.

The Independence Day appearance also proved to be O'Day's last time on the hill in 2021.

Originally put back on the ten-day injured list with a hamstring pull, it ended up being much worse for O'Day and the New York Yankees. On July 23rd, it was announced that Darren was now on the 60-day injured list effectively ending his 2021. The Yankees will surely miss their righty reliever as they try to qualify for the postseason.
