Batters Had No Brew In 1972, Part 2

So here was Jim Brewer on a Los Angeles Dodgers team in 1972 that was loaded with pitching talent.

You had 20-game winner Claude Osteen. Don Sutton won 19. Tommy John was 11-5. Al Downing was only 9-9, but his ERA was 2.98. The bullpen consisted of Pete Richert (02.25 ERA), Mike Strahler (3.26 ERA), 41-year old Hoyt Wilhelm and Pete Mikkelson. Ron Perranoski was back with the Dodgers that year. In nine games, he was 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA. A pretty good bullpen with those guys, but it was Jim Brewer that made it a great one.

The big stat is saves for modern statisticians, however, Jim recorded only seventeen in 1972. But what about some of his other numbers? They are very telling!

 How about a 1.26 ERA? Outstanding!

The opposition managed to get just 41 hits off Brewer in 78.1 IP, resulting in a WHIP of 0.843! Great!

Jim might not have been the greatest strikeout man out of the bullpen (He fanned 69 batters for a 7.9 K/9), but look at his WAR! 3.5. Excellent for relievers!
