Hail To The Chief, Part 1

Charles Albert Bender was a Native American who followed in the footsteps of Louis "Chief" Sockalexis and made to the majors. But unlike Sockalexis, who's career ended after just parts of three seasons and 97 games, the pitcher from Minnesota (Long before the Twins arrived) went on to a long Hall-of-Fame career, primary with the Philadelphia Athletics.

Bender had pitched heroically in many-a-big game for Connie Mack. He'd won seventeen games as a rookie in 1903, the season in which the first Fall Classic was played. The A's finished a distant second to the Boston Americans, who went on to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series that year. After slipping into fifth place in 1904, the Athletics put it all together in 1905, advancing to their first World Series. But Chief Bender and company simply couldn't hit Christy Mathewson, who led the New York Giants to the World Crown with three shutouts in the Fall Classic.

However, the Chief wasn't about to be overshadowed by anyone. Though Philadelphia had both Eddie Plank and Rube Waddell, it was Connie Mack that believe Bender was the best clutch pitcher out there. And as the 1910s began, it was Chief Bender who was frequently among the league-leaders in winning percentage and earned run average.

An early hint of his ability to adapt to the role of reliever came in 1913. Bender not only started 21 games, but he relieved in 27 others. The Chief went on to lead the junior circuit with thirteen saves and twenty-four games games finished. He also went 21-10 and posted an ERA of just 2.21. And Bender was up for the challenge of the Fall Classic that year, too. Philadelphia beat New York despite being shutout by Christy Mathewson in the second contest. When it was over Philly won in just five games and Bender got the W in two contests.

Inevitably, Chief Bender's career began to wind down not long after despite a 17-3 year in 1914. Pitching for Baltimore of the new Federal League, Bender was just 4-16 with a 3.99 ERA. He was back in Philadelphia the next year, but this time with the Phillies. Bender went just 7-7 in 1916.

So in 1917, The Chief got some quality time in the bullpen, even though he still had it as a starter. He started half of his twenty games, going 8-2, although none of his wins came when pitched in relief.

However, that's not to say Bender wasn't effective out of the bullpen. He might have pitched more, but the team's ace, Grove Cleveland Alexander, went 30-13 in 44 starts. Joe Oeechger appeared in twelve games as a reliever despite starting 30 games. Another starter, Erskine Mayer, made ten appearances in relief. Both pitched well.

But Bender might have been the best of the bullpen on that Philly team. Jimmy Lavender was okay. The Chief finished nine of his ten relief appearances. Paul Fittery actually topped the team with fifteen games saved, but posted a high ERA and won only one game. It was his last season in the bigs.

But it was The Chief that put in 113 innings in, 29 of them in relief. He had no problems making the adjustment. In his 29 innings out of the bullpen, he didn't lose a game. Jimmy Lavender had won 57 games the previous five years with the Chicago Cubs, but saw his win total dip to just six, to go along with eight losses. Bender actually led all pitchers on the Phillies with a .800 W%.
