Hail To The Chief, Part 2

So Chief Bender was the top bullpen man on the 1917 Philadelphia Phillies, Though Joe Oeschger and Erskine Mayer spent quality time in the Phillies relief corps, it was The Chief that seemed most comfortable in that role. Jimmy Lavender, who threw a no-hitter two years earlier with the Chicago Cubs, pitched fourteen times in relief that year. Jimmy was only 4-8 as a starter, but 2-0 with a save and a 1.80 earned run average as a reliever. However, Lavender could only finish nine of his fourteen  relief appearances.

1917 proved to be Bender's last season as a full-time player. He'd make precisely one last appearance in 1925 with the Chicago White Sox. Chief saved two games in '17, finishing nine of his ten relief appearances. While Lavender had a better ERA in relief, Bender won eight games and posted a fine 1.67 overall ERA. Lavender's overall ERA was 3.55. The Chief was also right there in bullpen as the season started, pitching exclusively in relief his first six outings. His season in Philadelphia didn't begin until June. Ironically, his first start of the season was July 31st. Going seven strong against St. Louis, Lavender relieved him. The Chief pitched three consecutive shutouts in August for the Phillies, throwing a one-hitter, three-hitter and four-hitter in sucession!

Interestingly enough, of the eight wins Bender got in 1917, half of them (four) were shutouts, proving he could still pitch the "big" game when called upon.

But Bender could also pitch relief. Bender finished nine of his ten relief appearances. His two saves brought his final career total to 34, which looks excellent to go along with 212 wins. His last year produced a 0.973 walks and hits per inning and a 3.7 wins above replacement. The Phillies released him at the end of the season despite his fine numbers. He pitched and coached in the minor leagues for a few years, then got back to the bigs in 1925 with the Chicago White Sox, where he made his last appearance on the mound in the bigs. He died in 1954, one year after being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
