It Runs In The Romo Family, Part 2

So how about the rest of Vinny Romo's stats as a rookie in 1968? Going by the raw numbers, saves, it's not eye-catching. Huevo, as he was called, collected just twelve saves in fifteen opportunities.

However, as has been the case before, there is more than just saves to determining any reliever's effectiveness. Vincent also had just one hold, but Romo posted an excellent earned run average of just 1.60. Plus, his walks and hits allowed per inning was just 0.901. Vinny's wins above replacement was 2.8 in '68. The Cleveland Indians had a pretty good reliever, but he would not be around much longer.

Huevo might not have been as good the following year, but did get eleven starts, going 8-10 overall in 1969, picking up another eleven saves. But his ERA was just 3.13 in 135.1 innings pitched. Romo was traded to Boston that year, and the Red Sox used him as a spot starter in 1970, just as they and Cleveland had the year before. His ERA climbed to over four, but he went 7-3 and started ten games. It was on to the other Sox, Chicago in 1971. Romo kept his ERA below 3.50, yet somehow went just 1-7 his first year with the White Sox, improving to a perfect 3-0 the next season. After a two-year stop with San Diego Padres, Vincent headed back home to Mexico even though he'd saved another nine games in 1974. The Padres had simply given him his walking papers in the spring of 1975. For now, his major league career was over.

From 1975-1981, Huevo pitched at the AAA level for Cordoba and Azules de Coatzacoalcos. Remarkably, it was in Coatzacoalcos where he had a very old teammate in pitcher George Brunet. This was all in 1981, and a return to the big leagues was about to happen. The St. Louis Cardinals had put Romo on their radar, purchasing him in the off-season. However, by the time the next season rolled around, Vinny was back in Mexico.

But in May of 1982, it was the Romo that was back in the bigs. It must have been tough on him, as Vincent joined the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1982, hoping for a World Series repeat. The Dodgers were loaded on the hill. They had Fenando Valenzuela, who proved his spectacular rookie season was not fluke in 1981, goign 19-13 with a 2.87 ERA as a sophomore. Jerry Reuss went 18-11 with a 3.11 ERA. Bob Welch won sixteen games, but Burt Hooton had an off-year, going just 4-7. The bullpen, which Vincent Romo would be a part of, was also just as good as it had been the year before. Steve Howe won seven, saved thirteen and posted a microscopic ERA of just 2.08. Dave Stewart was slowly making his way up to the greatness that he would have when he arrived at Oakland later in the decade. For now, he was 9-8 with a 3.81 ERA. Stew started just fourteen games that year. Terry Foster was only 5-6, but both Tom Niedenfuer and him posted splendid ERA's. The forgotten Joe Beckwith only pitched nineteen games, but exactly forty innings despite just one start. Joe was just 2-1, but his earned run average was right there with everyone else in the bullpen, 2.70.

It was Hooton who was a Dodgers delima, though. Burt was hurt and Vinny took over. Although he struggled, Romo won a start in July against Montreal. So he still had it as a starter.

Romo got into just fifteen games, starting six. Yet, he'd lost nothing in his six seasons south of the border. Although only 1-2, Huevo posted an ERA of just 3.03. Romo's season ended on an injury to his leg. As it turns out, Huevo had pitched for the last time in the bigs.
