Rob Dibble had pitched in the Cincinnati Reds system since 1983. But he was only 3-2 with Eugene of the Northwestern League in '83 and his ERA was over five. With Billings of the Pioneer League, Rob was 0-1 with an earned run average of nearly eight.
Dibble turned things around.
With Tampa of the Florida League in 1984, Rob started eleven games, relieved four other times, and was 5-2 with an ERA of just 2.92. But the Reds' organization must have seen a future for him in the bullpen, as aside from a start in 1985 and '86, he was exclusively a reliever from that point on. Nasty Boy won fourteen games and saved another twenty-nine from 1985 to 1987.
All this led Officer Dibble to a promotion to the parent club come '88. Dibble, the rookie, went 1-1 with an excellent earned run average in 37 appearances. Then, in 1989, he truly took off. Rob won ten games, lost just five, and picked up his first two major league saves.
But how about 1990? Well, Nasty Boy was nasty on the hill!
Rob was still a winner, as he picked up eight more W's on the hill. He also lost just three games, giving him a two year record of 18-8. Rob made 68 appearances on the mound, and even got some closing opportunities. In 1989 he'd finished only 18 games. But in 1990, Officer upped that to 29. Plus, he against flirted with 100 innings, finishing with 98.0 frames pitched. All this would pay divides as Cincinnati clinched their first division titles since 1979. And the Reds would have a few surprises up their sleeves for both the Pirates and Athletics in the postseason!
