Nasty Boy Pitched Cincinnati All The Way, Part 2

1990 was Rob Dibble's first year where he reached double digits in saves. Though his 1989 season was great (10-5, 2.09 earned run average), for all of his efforts Dibble had just two saves.

But the next year, Rob had eleven saves and seventeen holds. Following up on his career-high 141 strikeouts in 1989, Dibble added 136 in 98.0 innings pitched the next season. And while his Wins Above Replacement was 3.9 in '89, in '90 Nasty Boy upped that to a 4.0. You would think Rob would have had a tough chore ahead of him if he wanted a better ERA in 1990 than in 1989, but he did just that. 1.74! Nasty Boy posted a Walks + Hits Per Innings Pitched of 0.980. And Officer was just mowing 'em down: 136 K's for a 12.5 K/9!

Oddly enough, Dibble got only one more save in the postseason. Facing Barry Bonds and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Championship Series, Rob Dibble picked up a hold in games three and four, then added a save in the fifth contest. The Pirates starved off elimination with a close 3-2 win in game five, but dropped a 3-2 decision in the sixth contest.

Cincinnati faced Oakland in the Fall Classic in a rematch of the 1972 World Series. The Athletics were tough, but the Reds needed just four games to win it all! Dibble pitched a scoreless eighth inning in the 7-0 laugher in the opening game. The Reds needed ten to make Dibble the game two winner. Rob pitched another 1 2/3 innings in game three, as he pitched the top of the seventh in Oakland. It was 8-3 for the visitors but Tom Browning gave up a leadoff single to Willie Randolf. Dibble came in, and fanned Willie McGee. Rickey Henderson also wend down on strikes and Carney Lansford flied out to end the threat. Rob retired Jose Canseco and Dave Henderson in the bottom of the eighth before giving way to Randy Myers. The A's did not score again that game. Jose Rijo completed the sweep of the Oakland with a 2-1 in game four.
