Larry Sherry served as both a starter and bullpen ace for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1959. Though he went 2-2 in nine contests as a starter, Larry was a perfect 5-0 out of the bullpen. And he added two more wins in the postseason.
Though he appeared in only four save opportunities, Sherry saved three of them. In the World Series, he was even better. He saved both save opportunities!
Sherry was 2-2 in save situations in August, in addition to going 3-0 that month. His two relief wins were in themselves impressive. He went five innings in one and two in the other. The next month, Sherry finally blew a save, but collected another two wins in relief.
Sherry finished 1959 with just those three saves, but he'd improve in the coming years. In 1960, he recorded seven saves to go along with fourteen wins and ten losses. In 1961, with a solid starting staff of Sandy Koufax, Johhny Podres, Don Drysdale and Stan Williams, Sherry saved fifteen more. He'd continue to be a big winner (7-3 in 1962, 7-5 in '64 and 8-5 in 1966) and a reach double-figures in saves (11 in both 1962 and 11 more in 1964). His best save total was with Detroit in 1966 when he recorded 20, yet his best ERA outside of 1959 was 3.10 in 1965. He pitched pro ball in 1970, retiring after going 4-3 with six saves and an ERA of 2.45 for Mobile ("AA").
But Sherry's crowing moment will always be with the Los Angeles Dodgers of 1959. After going 2-0 with two saves in the World Series against the Chicago White Sox, Sherry won both the MVP and Babe Ruth (Outstanding Performer) Award for his efforts in the Fall Classic.
Larry had posted an impressive 3.6 Wins Above Replacement, which is comparable to that of Ryne Duren, also from 1959. Elroy Face (18-1 in '59) WAR (3.2) was actually less than Larry Sherry's.
