Sherry Was Scary In 1959, Part 1

Larry Sherry seemed destined to lead to the Los Angeles Dodgers to the World Series in 1959. But exactly what role would he be used in?

Sherry had been with the Dodgers' organization since 1953, when they and the Giants were still five years away from moving out west. He started out west, before any of his 1958 teammates got there. Pitching for Santa Barbra of the California League, Sherry was 1-2 with 4.54 earned run average in just nine games. Six times he relieved. By 1957, the Dodgers were playing their last year in Brooklyn, but Larry was still pitching out west. Ironically, with Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, Brooklyn's affiliate, Sherry got into five games but his ERA was worse than that: 5.23! However, his 1957 season wasn't all bad. Pitching for the Fort Worth Cats of the Texas League, things were much better: 10-10 with a 3.07 earned run average! The Dodgers were in Los Angeles the next year, and Larry Sherry did not impress in five big league appearances. His stay at AAA Spokane was hardly encouraging either: 6-14 with an ERA of 4.91.

So how did this pitcher, who seemed destined to languish in the minors leagues for ever become so important in 1959? There was his stint with with the 1958 Cabimas of the Occidental Winter League. And over the winter Larry Sherry was 8-8.

Okay, maybe that wasn't so good...But neither was LA. They won only 73 games out west. How bad was the pitching? Ace Johnny Podres, who hadn't thrown a single pitch in '57, was just 13-15. Don Drysdale was just 12-13 after winning 17 games in '57. Only Stan Williams (9-7) and Sandy Koufax (11-11) acquitted themselves that year.

But, LA bounced back in 1959. Sherry didn't pitch for them until July, but was ready. The Dodgers had gotten off to a much better start. Again, it was pitching that made or broke the team. Drysdale lost his first decision, but had a 3-1 record by the end of April. He'd be a huge contributor for this team for the next ten years. Koufax was only 1-1 by the end of May, but his numbers would improve as the season moved on. Podres was back and finished 14-9. And Roger Craig, finished the season 11-5 with a low ERA.

But how about the bullpen? True, LA was eight games above play going into a double-header on July 4th, but Sherry was needed. More as a reliever. Yet given the start against the Chicago Cubs, he went seven strong and took a tough 2-1 loss. That was the bad news. The good news? He'd be around a while!

Within a month, he was relieving. Not that he wasn't strong as a starter. July ended with him just 1-2. But August was 3-0. September, even better. Although he started just one game (And got a complete -game shutout in that!) Larry had himself another 3-0 month. He would not lose another game that season as Los Angeles won the pennant. Actually, LA needed a sweep of two-time National League champions the Milwaukee Braves to win the flag in a playoff. Sherry's seven and final regular season triumph was impressive: A 7.2 inning relief stint. Larry allowed just four hits and two walks in throwing "0's" on the scoreboard. It was important as the Dodgers edged the Braves 3-2. A 6-5 win over Milwaukee in the next game gave LA the pennant!

Sherry wasn't done there as he added two more wins in the World Series against the Chicago White Sox. The Dodgers won in six games for their second World Championship, but also the first since they'd moved out west.

Sherry himself had contributed. So, after his slow start, he was 7-2 in the regular season and 2-0 in the postseason. Although he made just fourteen relief appearances, he finished ten of them. He pretty much ended up just as effective a relief as a starter. And despite not joining the big-league team until July, Larry ended up pitching 94.1 innings.
