Batter's Feet Were Made Of Clay in 1971, Part 1

Clay Carroll is one of those relief pitchers that I had a hard time deciding on "one". As in, one season. Which one season of his in relief was the best.

Clay had started out in Davenport ("D" Ball) in the Milwaukee Braves organization in 1961. There, he was only 7-10. But with Boise at "C" level next year, Carroll was 14-7. His progress was rapid, as Carroll keep winning. Eleven games combined at "AA" and "AAA" in '63, then making the jump to the bigs in 1964. There, he was 2-0 with the Braves.

By 1966, he was a workhorse. Clay topped the National League in appearances (73) in 1966 as the team moved to Atlanta. However, Carroll was lacking consistency: He was just 8-7 that year, 6-12 the next, and finally 7-8 in 1969, the year Clay was traded to Cincinnati.

But it was there that, as a Red, the reliver found his groove. In '69 he had his first "big" win total: Twelve! Stack that up against just five losses.

For me, his 1971 season for the Cincinnati Reds was Clay Carroll's best, for me at least. Clay appeared in 61 games, exclusively in relief. He finished 40 of those 61 appearances. And Carroll had another excellent win-loss record (10-4). Caroll might have only tossed 93 2/3 innings (Down nearly eleven frames from 1970, and a far cry from his career-best 150 2/3 in '69), but his effectiveness was still there.

However, in the big picture, Cincinnati was not the team they'd been in 1970, as they did not reach the World Series. They would be back in 1972, however.
