Batters Feet Were Made of Clay in 1971, Part 2

 

Clay Carroll hadn't been a stranger to finishing games by 1971. The Cincinnati Reds' pitcher had helped his team get to the World Series the previous year, only to lose to Baltimore in five games.

There were no repeats for the Reds in '71, but Carroll himself was making giant strides as one of the best relievers in the game. In 1966, pitching for the Atlanta Braves (And having Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, Joe Torre, Felipe Alou and Mack Jones hit 'em out of the park very often) Clay appeared in a league-best 73 contests. He won eight games, saved eleven more, and posted a 2.37 earned run average.

In 1968, Carroll was traded to Cincinnati, but upped the save total to seventeen. In 1970, his contributions to the Cincy flag were nine wins against just four losses, sixteen saves and an ERA of just 2.59.

In 1971, the Cincinnati Reds' pitcher dropped his earned run average to just 2.50. Clay saved fifteen games and recorded four holds. His walks and hits allowed per inning was 1.281. However, Carroll allowed a career-low 7.5 hits per nine.

Carroll continued to pitch well for Cincinnati. The team returned to the Fall Classic in 1972, falling just short to the Oakland Athletics in the World Series. Carroll was 0-1 in the World Series, but registered a 1.59 earned run average. In the regular season, he'd topped the National League with 37 saves.

Though Clay Carroll never approached that save total in a season again, by no means was he through being effective. In 1974, he won twelve games and posted an ERA of just 2.15. And Clay's ERA stayed below three until he retired, as his '73's 3.69 ERA and an 8-8 record were his last poor campaign.

Carroll helped the Reds win the World Series in 1975 over the Red Sox. Cincinnati won the next season, but Clay was no longer a Red. He was now on the Chicago White Sox, winning four games and having a great 2.56 earned run average. From there, Clay played for the Cardinals, returned to the White Sox, and finished his career with Pittsburgh Pirates. Although the Milwaukee Brewers signed him for 1979, he spent the entire year pitching in "AAA" Vancouver, struggling to regain his form. Clay then hung 'em up his cleats for good.
