Conzelman Was The Top Pirate Relief Pitcher in 1914, Part 1

Joe Conzelman has little, if anything, written about him on the internet. And his career, as you might expect was very short.

Joe pitched for both Pittsburgh and Atlanta (Of "A" ball) in 1913 and showed plenty of promise. With Atlanta, he was 11-3. When Pittsburgh called him up, he went only 0-1 but had a low earned run average, 1.20.

In 1914, however, Joe had his one and only great season at the big-league level. And it was Conzelman's only full season in major league baseball. He made the most of it. Although only 5-6, the rookie found himself coming in out of the bullpen for starters Babe Adams, Wilbur Cooper, George McQuillan and Bob Harmon.

The Pirates were not a good team in '14, finishing 69-85, but they sure had some finishers in the bullpen.

None were as good as Joe Conzelman. Sure, there was Marty O'Toole. Marty was just 1-8, with a 4.68 earned run average. And he was purchased by the Giants in August. That leaves it down to Erv Kantlehner (3-2, 3.09 ERA) and another rookie, Al Mamaux. Mamaux was 5-2 with a 1.71 earned run average, but appeared in just thirteen games.

Where Conzelman excels is that he made just nine starts in 33 appearances. Marmaux actually started six games, so Joe Conzelman was more of the go-to guy. Of 

And Joe won five games as mentioned. He also had over 100 innings pitched (101.0). Pittsburgh generally only used him in games that the Pirates lost, but nonetheless, he was effective. Joe finished sixteen of his 24 relief appearances. Conzelman actually had a .500 record as a reliever (2-2) but was just 3-4 in his nine starts.
