So it's not going to be an easy task for me to prove that Sosa was the best of the Expos' bullpen in 1979. Since Montreal won 95 games that season, and gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a real run in the National League East (The Bucs ended up with 98 wins), there were other factors.
However, Elias won eight games that year. Two other bullpen pitchers (Dave Palmer and Rudy May) reached double figures in wins. And Palmer was a little bit like Jim Palmer that year: He started eleven games.
Sosa recorded eighteen saves, so he clearly was closer. However, Woodie Fryman got ten himself. Just a comparison:

So Fryman was better at converting saves than Sosa. Elias did work more innings, and had a better W-L record that Woodie. The biggest argument I have is their earned run average. While Fryman's was very good (2.79), it was Sosa's that was excellent, 1.96.
While were are on the topic, it should be noted Rudy May won ten games for Montreal in 1979, posted a 2.31 ERA. This would suggest he was as good as Sosa. However, the edge goes to Elias since Rudy did not collect a save, or even a hold for that matter.
For Elias Sosa, it had been a while since he'd had this many saves. Six seasons earlier, the right-hander won ten games in addition to saving eighteen with San Francisco. However, Elias' earned run averaged was 3.28. I don't think that season beats out another where you save as many, win nearly as many, and post an ERA of less than two.
The righty from La Vega in the Dominican Republic wasn't an overpowering type. But his walks and hits allowed per innings pitched was good.
Sosa continued to be an effective relieve as the new decade arrived. He also continued to be a big winner out of the Expos' bullpen. In 1980, at the age of 32, Elias went 9-6 and saved another nine games for Montreal.
1981 was the right-handers' last season in Canada. While Sosa was only 1-2 with a 3.66 earned run average, the Expos advanced to the postseason for the first (And as it turns out, only) time in franchise history. Montreal was in only their thirteenth season.
Once there, Montreal beat the defending World Series winners, Philadelphia in the League Division Series. Due to a strike, this was the expanded version of the postseason (It would not return to this format until 1995). Then, Montreal gave the eventual World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, all they could handle. The 1981 National League Championship Series went the distance (Five games) before a Rick Monday home run gave the visiting Dodgers a win in the deciding game five.
Sosa, for his part, helped the underdog Montreal Expos get that far. Vs. Philadelphia, he'd tossed three innings, allowing just one earned run in the LDS. In the NLCS, Elias pitched the top of the ninth inning of game four. But Los Angeles was already up 5-1.
There were runners on first and second with only one out as Elias Sosa relieved Woody Fryman. Sosa retired Steve Garvey on a fly to right. But Ron Cey singled off him, scoring Bill Russell. When Ken Landreaux walked on four pitches, Sosa was lifted in favour of lefty Bill Lee. Lee surrendered a single to Reggie Smith, then retired Steve Yeager to end the innings. But it was LA that won the contest, 7-1.
It was Sosa's last season in Montreal. In 1982, he moved on to the Detroit Tigers. From there, the veteran righty moved on to San Diego. The Padres ended up face the Tigers in the 1984 World Series, but Sosa only lasted through 1983 with San Diego. It was his last major league season. Four years later, Elias Sosa pitched for San Jose of the California League. But after three outings and an earned-run average of 9.95, he hung up his cleats.
