Palmer Was Right Up There With Sosa In 1979, Part 1

My previous entry was about Elias Sosa on the 1979 Montreal Expos. But can I overlook some of Sosa's bullpen buddies from a Montreal team that won 95 games that season?

David Palmer was one of two Montreal Expos pitchers that won ten games while starting less than a dozen contests. Palmer was 10-2 and Rudy May was 10-3. There is little to choose between the two. Elias Sosa was the closer and the best of them, however.

Not that we should overlook Palmer (I'll get to May in a forthcoming blog, I promise). David had actually just reached the bigs the previous season. In 1978, Palmer was 0-1, but with a 2.79 earned run average in just five games. He showed promise.

In the years leading up to '78, David had struggled with Lethbridge of the Pioneer League (Rookie Ball). That's Lethbridge, Alberta, by the way. But Palmer would want to just as soon forget his stay there. In thirteen games (Three starts), the pitcher was just 0-5 with an ERA of 7.20.

Okay, a rough start. But our boy wasn't about to throw in the towel just yet. The next season saw the 6'1 righty come back with a 6-8 record with West Palm Beach of the Florida League ("A" Ball). His ERA dropped down to 2.87. It was just 1.94 the next season with the team. Dave also pitched for Memphis ("AA" Ball) and was 8-10 there, but with a pretty good earned run average.

So did it just automatically come together in 1979 for Palmer?

His very first appearance of '79 saw him give up four hits in three innings. But he got the save. Palmer's next appearance was also three innings. This time, David allowed just two hits. And he got the win.

By the end of June he'd been exclusively a reliever. But in July David Palmer started twice. His win-loss record was just 3-2 by the end of that month. But a 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on July 24th was Palmer's last. He was 3-0 in August and an even better 4-0 in September. The Expos believed in him enough to let him go ten innings in Dave's last outing.

Palmer his spectacular 1979 season with ten wins. While he started eleven of his 33 games, he also finished thirteen of them. He ended up pitching an impressive 122 2/3 innings. Elias Sosa, as you can see, won eight games himself. So three pitchers out of the Expos' bullpen in '79 combined for 28 wins.

But no other pitcher in Montreal's bullpen that season topped 100 innings.
