So David Palmer won ten games out of the Montreal Expos' bullpen in 1979. That tied him with Rudy May for wins among Expos' relief pitchers. Dave had some more company, as closer Elias Sosa had eighteen saves himself. How can I prove Palmer was as important, or almost as important as Sosa
Well, our boy had only two saves (Both and April) and sort of settled into the role of long reliever / starter the rest of the season. Elias Sosa had eighteen to top the team. That doesn't, however, mean Dave Palmer wasn't needed.
Palmer didn't pick up any holds (Sosa and Stan Bahnsen topped the Expos with four each in '79), but his earned run average was just 2.64. Obviously, Sosa topped all Expos relievers with an amazing 1.96 ERA. David Palmer had some serious competition there:
Bahnsen: 3.15
May: 2.31
Woody Fryman: 2.79
So David is right in the middle of the pack. Palmer averaged slightly less K's per nine than Sosa did, 5.3. But what David did do is top all Expos' bullpen men (25 or more appearances) in walks and hits allowed per inning: 1.141! But Palmer still has to take a back seat to Sosa's 3.1 wins above replacement. Palmer's wasn't too far off, however, 2.2.
Sadly, David would struggle with injuries and inconsistency the rest of his professional baseball career. Generally, though, he was effective. He'd even spend some time in the starting rotation. In 1980, Palmer started eighteen games, won eight, and posted an earned-run average under three. During that season, he developed soreness in his right (pitching) arm. This would affect him in the coming years.
In between 1981 and 1983 (In which David did not appear in a single major league game), he had another strong season, 6-4, 3.18 ERA. The bad news was, the old injury was still there. After an August game, calcium deposits were found in his right elbow. So that forced Palmer to miss all of 1982. Back in the bigs in 1984, Palmer was back to his winning ways, positing a 7-3 record with Montreal. And he was better than that. He was perfect in a five-inning game played on April 21st of that season. The victims were the St. Louis Cardinals.
Have you seen this scenario before? Dave's record was just 2-3 by June the 26th. But he was 5-0 the rest of the way (With a very good 3.05 earned run average) despite experiencing some should problems in August. That injury forced him to miss that entire month! The Expos, though, could count on David Palmer down the stretch when he was healthy. The team wasn't that good that year, alas. Montreal came out on top just 78 times in 1982, one season after being within one win of the World Series.
Pretty much just a starter from 1982 on, David Palmer was just a .500 pitcher the rest of his major league career, despite winning a career-best eleven games with the Atlanta Braves in 1986. There were also stops in Philadelphia and Detroit, but Palmer was just a combined 33-43 from 1985-1989.
After struggling in 1989 with Detroit (0-3 with a 7.79 ERA), David found himself released. The Cleveland Indians signed him and Palmer pitched in the minors leagues. Before being released, David had already experienced some "AAA" action. He was 2-4 with a 3.93 ERA in Toledo in 1989. Cleveland had taken a chance on him. With Colorado Springs, Palmer improved to 2-2, but his earned run average was high (4.23). The Indians released him after the season.
Now pitching in an independent league in 1990, David Palmer went 1-0 with Reno of the California League. But a return to the big leagues wasn't in the cards for the 32-year old right-hander. He had 64 wins to his name in only 212 games pitched at that level. From there, he became a high school pitching coach.
David did his time at Parkview High School. After eight years there, David moved on. Or should I say, back. Back at his old stomping grounds, Glen Falls High School, and did some more coaching the sport he loves.
