Not Too Many Batters Willing In 1975, Part 1

It would be hard to make one relief pitcher to stick out like a sore thumb on the 1975 Cincinnati Reds team. For starters, there was a good reason none of the starting pitchers won twenty games, even though the team itself totaled 108 instances of crossing homes more times than the opposition.

One such valuable relief pitcher was Will McEnaney. Cincinnati was loaded in the bullpen and Will was the "New guy". But, a valuable new guy.

Although McEnaney was 2-1 in 1974 with Cincinnati, you kinda couldn't see him as anywhere near as effective as the other members of the Reds' bullpen. Cincinnati did not win the pennant that year, despite coming out on top 98 times. Will took a back seat to pitchers like Pedro Borbon, who won ten games. Clay Caroll won a dozen. Will McEnaney only pitched in 24 contests for Cincinnati that year, his first in the major leagues.

The lefty had started his professional baseball career with Sioux Falls of the Northern League four years earlier. Things did not go well for Will. He was 3-10 with an earned-run average of 5.17. But he improved to 14-5 with a very good ERA of just 2.44 in 1971 pitching for Tampa Bay of the Florida League. So two seasons at the "A" level had showed his rapid improvement.

This continued in 1972 at the "AA" level. Pitching with Trois-Rivieres (Quebec, Canada) that season, McEnaney continued his strong showing. 11-6, 2.80 earned run average. He'd pitch again in the the province of Quebec, but that would be in the big leagues.

Speaking of which, what was taking his team, Cincinnati, so long to call up Will? Well, advancing to the "AAA" level with Indianapolis in 1973, the left-hander went 9-9, but his earned-run average was way too high, 3.93. However, Will found himself the winning pitcher in the All-Star game.

But while our boy started all 29 of his '73 appearances with the Indianapolis Indians, they decided to move him to an exclusive bullpen job the next year. It would open the door to the bigs.

So Will McEnaney pitched 29 more times in 1974, but now that he was in the 'pen, what a difference! Instead of his ERA being nearly four with the Indians, it was just 2.30, along with a 2-1 record. Better still, the Cincinnati Reds called him up in July.

Once there, the new left-handed pitcher was 2-1 in 24 appearances in his rookie season. Cincinnati led him finish ten games and he saved two.

So, everything seemed to go right for the Cincinnati Reds in 1975. They won the pennant. Did Will contribute? Well, he wasn't the closer. That was Rawley Eastwick's job. Eastwick also won five games and made 58 appearances.

It was quite a Reds' bullpen. The team won 108 games, and the pitching staff didn't have a single 20-game winner. Want to know why? They didn't need one! The bullpen would come in if the game was tied or they were losing and do the job.

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating. The Reds essentially had six pitchers who could start. Gary Nolan, Jack Billingham and Don Gullet won exactly fifteen games. But Fred Norman won a dozen. Pat Darcy, who gave up the twelfth-inning home run to Carlton Fisk in game six of that year's World Series, came up with a "W" in eleven times. Then there was Clay Kirby, who won ten contests. Six pitchers, ten-plus wins.

But then, you had a bullpen man like Pedro Borbon. Pedro won nine games himself. Clay Carroll got seven. Was there anything left for Will McEnaney? Well, he won five games, tying himself with Eastwick for third on the Cincinnati bullpen staff in W's.

But it should also be noted that, so strong the Reds' pitching that year, another pitcher, Tom Carroll, won four games despite only making twelve appearances, seven starts. The bullpen had to really work to get those wins.

But how about the big dependability stat? Appearances?

Eastwick made only 58. Carroll 56. Borbon made 67. And Will McEnaney? 70. You think he didn't get to do Rawley Eastwick's job sometimes? Interestingly, Rawley finished 40 games, but our boy was right up there with him with 38.

It was Pedro Borbon who topped the Cincinnati bullpen in 1975 with 125 innings pitched. But again, it's not to take anything away from McEnaney. Will had 91 innings to his name in '75. Eastwick had 90, Carroll 96 1/3.
